Page 116 to 123 of the book are covered in this lecture. Errors on both sides are made with the Lord's Supper:"No sacrifice" on on side vs. "Sacrificing the Mass" on the other side which is a work and where synergism is involved. The Sacrifice of Thanksgiving is contrasted with a sacrifice that is participatory, which is wrong. The Holy Spirit gives voice to our thanks.

Jesus did not tell us "when", but told us about the signs that would take place before the impending judgment. All believers have received the "first resurrection" at their baptism.

Four reasons are given as to why the Holy Supper is simultaneously sacrificial and sacramental. Old Testament sacrifices are inferior because they need to be repeated. Body and blood is sacrificial from God's divine perspective and sacramental from man's point of view, receiving forgiveness as free gift. Jesus is the sacrifice, "once and for all".

Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Matthew 24:29-31, Scriptures about the End Times are intended to give hope and encourage those in the faith. Judgment is never given in Scripture apart from reference to the Gospel and salvation for those in Christ. When we lose loved ones in the faith, we don't lose hope. It causes us to look forward.

Scripture: Deuteronomy 12:27;Hebrews 7:25;1 Corinthians 10:16, Today's teaching, beginning on page 108 of our book, contrasts the Lutheran view of the Lord's Supper (4 elements present: e.g. Sacramental Union) with the doctrinal view of the Roman Catholics (2 elements: e.g. Transubstantiation). Sacrifice of the Mass is discussed including the key question "Sacrifice by Whom?"

Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12;1 Peter 2:12, Sanctification is God's will for our lives. Paul directs believers at this church to be alert to two areas of struggle: sexual immorality (Paul links this to idolatry) and our vocation. The Holy Spirit gives believers gifts for the common good of one another, our family in the body of Christ. These two areas of struggle affect the body of Christ and our relationship with one another.

Transubstantiation is reviewed and discussed in length. Hypostatic union that describes the union of Christ's humanity and divinity in one hypostasis, or individual existence is used to define the Sacramental Union of Christ's Body and the bread in the Lord's Supper.

Roman Catholics believe transubstantiation means Christ is bodily present at the Lord's supper. This is what Lutherans believe too. Roman Catholics believe only two elements are present at the Lord's Supper, Body and Blood. Lutherans believe four elements are present: bread, wine, Body and Blood. This lecture focuses on this contrast in doctrine.
