  • Kategorisierungen des kulturell Fremden in einer High-Tech-Firma
The theory and practice of Intercultural Communication focuses on the “between cultures”. It is the fundamental assumption of that discipline that the cultural boundary – the difference between “We” and “the Other” – can be located and that the Interculturalist possesses the capability of doing so. But what is really happening in the so called "Intercultural Fields"?
In my dissertation that is based on two years of ethnographic research, I present the case of a German High-Tech-Company where the boundary between “We” and “the Other” cannot be defined precisely anymore. Instead of simple distinctions between national cultures the actors in the field – highly-qualified engineers who are working together at a German and an Indian company site – construct collective identity according to context and very often in contrast to the external discourse of national cultural differences. The actors’ perception of cultural difference is multiple, heterogenous, sometimes ambiguous and context-specific. According to context, they possess the agency to use many discourses of "We" and "the Other" if it serves their needs. Thus, also the difficulties the actors in the field experience in cross-site work do not match management assumptions and depend on the respective actor's interpretation of their own boundary conditions like re-organisation from above, the discourse of globalisation and the conflicting topic of technical ownership.
As this interpretative approach to global interaction in multinational companies shows, cross-site work is often "beyond national culture".

The topic of my dissertation is the political and philosophical thought of Lü Zuqian (1137-1181), one of the key players in the history of the "True Way Learning" (Daoxue) in Southern Song China and a close associate of Zhu Xi (1130-1200). Focusing on core concepts in Lü’s writings like self-cultivation, imperial sovereignty, law, rites, institutions and reform, this study advances a new interpretation of Lü Zuqian's modes of thinking. The comparison of Lü Zuqian's political ideas to those of contemporaries such as Zhu Xi, Zhang Shi (1133-1180), Lu Jiuyuan (1139-1193), Chen Liang (1143-1194) and Ye Shi (1150-1223) clarifies the political language and the political engagements of Daoxue thinkers. This case study tries to explain the fundamental nature of political Daoxue discourse between 1160 and 1180 and to shed new light on the interpretation of "Neo-Confucian" thought in general.

  • Water Reservoirs in South India
The thesis highlights that culture matters to the water supply, which is often considered mainly a technical and economical task. Based on fieldwork in Tamil Nadu /South India, it explores how water reservoirs work, how they are utilised, managed, perceived and which role they play in rituals. It deconstructs notions such as "community management" and "traditional institutions" and traces the water reservoirs' deep entanglement in local politics and beliefs. It also provides an ethnography of water uses and discusses the cultural meaning of water.
At the same time, the thesis demonstrates that the water supply is a tool to understand a local society, the role of the state, identity formation, caste, and the effects of colonialism.
