  • Normalmodenanalyse der Struktureigenschaften des asiatischen Sommermonsuns
This thesis is about normal mode analysis on multi-scale characteristics of Asian summer monsoons. In this study a new concept of utilizing generalized normal mode initialization (NMI) is introduced for climatic analysis and diagnosis. For the actual constitution of normal modes (NMs)in this study, a two layer shallow water model was selected. We used the 17 year-atmospheric data to construct the basic state with the summer mean over those 17 years and to define the actual anomalies of the special summers relative to the climatic mean. The highlight in this study about normal mode analysis of Asian Summer Monsoons is that for the first time the following were considered with the instability of the 3-D basic state:
    1) the nonlinear dynamic balancing of NMI, 2) the effects of hard orography (not only quasi-linear effects of vorticity and divergence), 3) actual anomalies of special episodes relative to a climatic mean and 4) the normal mode group with a specific range of oscillation frequencies. The NMs and NMI were conducted in two experiment-groups: 1)impacts of SST-anomalies with ENSO on Asian summer monsoons and 2)interannual variability of Meiyu and connections to multi-scale oscillations of Asian summer monsoons and yielded the interesting conclusions on Asian monsoon climate. The important insight from this thesis is that MNs and NMI, which have been used in the numerical weather forecast, were successfully applied in climatic analysis of Asian summer monsoons. Compared with the other methods, NMs and NMI have two advantages: 1) the atmospheric circulation structures in different time scales can be identified with normal mode groups giving distinctive signals, and 2) the impacts of various physical processes on the atmospheric circulation or climate change can be detected from the complement of the actual atmosphere to the model solution.

  • Numerical Renormalization Group studies of Quantum Impurity Models in the Strong Coupling Limit
In this thesis we summarize a number of theoretical studies
dealing with various properties of quantum dots.
Small quantum dots with a large level spacing
are very well described by the Anderson impurity model.
In modern quantum dot experiments all parameters of this model can be tuned via external gate voltages. Thus, it should be possible to check our theoretical findings experimentally.
We are particularly interested in temperatures $T$ smaller than the so-called Kondo temperature $T_K$, $T

The influence of cloud inhomogeneity on the remote sensing of cloud parameters and the consequences for the determination of the radiation budget in the solar spectral range are studied. Standard techniques of remote sensing are based on simplifying assumptions on radiative transport: clouds are assumed to be homogeneous throughout each pixel and the interaction between pixels is neglected. The quantification of the resulting uncertainties is of major concern considering the potential of remote sensing for a global characterisation of clouds and their interaction with the radiation field. For this purpose, the three-dimensional radiative transport (using a Monte Carlo model) and remote sensing are simulated for a number of realistic cloud structures. The latter are based on high resolution measurements (15 m horizontal resolution) of marine stratus and stratocumulus from the airborne spectrometer CASI. The development of a novel method is described that allows for the derivation of a horizontal distribution of liquid water path, of a profile of microphysics, and of a realistic cloud top geometry. Based on these cloud structures a systematic investigation of a standard remote sensing technique for the simultaneous derivation of optical thickness and effective droplet size is conducted for different sensor geometries (resolution, viewing angle). While the systematic deviation for the optical thickness of overcast pixels is always lower than 5%, the bias increases for partially covered pixels (10-30%). In contrast, the uncertainty for individual pixels can reach more than 50%. The effective radius is systematically underestimated by 3 to 5%. If the solar part of the radiation budget, e.g. the scene reflection, is determined based on these data, deviations from the actual situation between 3 and 10% do occur.

  • Time-dependent boundaries in numerical models
This dissertation describes the development of a new numerical framework enabling the study of principal atmospheric mechanisms as well as aspects of numerical realisability that are neither easily deduced from highly optimised operational numerical weather prediction models nor idealised laboratory studies. The theoretical
development and efficient numerical implementation of a generalised time-dependent coordinate transformation
is demonstrated, creating a unified numerical framework for investigating the influence of upper and lower boundary conditions on atmospheric and oceanic flows. In technical terms, the dissertation also enhances the adaptivity of numerical models to boundary forcings determined by data.
The theoretical development is illustrated with numerical simulations of idealised flows. An example of a practical application is given which incorporates a long-wave-approximation for a finite-amplitude free-surface upper boundary, directly relevant to ocean models.
Finally, the utility of the generalised vertical coordinate in simulating stratified flows with intricate geometric, time-dependent boundary forcings is demonstrated in the direct numerical simulation of the laboratory analogue of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO), the dominant variability in the equatorial stratosphere. While the laboratory experiment exhibits the principal mechanism of the QBO, and despite numerous studies of the stratospheric phenomenon, a complete understanding of the QBO eludes the efforts. On the basis of the numerical results presented in this thesis, the original explanation of the laboratory experiment is revised. The findings stress the utility of this numerical framework and further elevate the importance of the laboratory setup for its fundamental similarity to the atmosphere. A detailed study of parametric and numerical sensitivities of the oscillation is presented and implications on the successful simulation and on the existing theory of equatorial oscillations are discussed.

  • Elastic Photoproduction of J/psi Vector Mesons at high Photon-Proton Centre-of-Mass Energy at the H1 Experiment at HERA
The elastic photoproduction of J/psi vector mesons at large values of the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy 135GeV=180.6GeV)=(5.1+-0.3+-0.2)GeV^-2c^-2, b(=250.7GeV)=(5.4+-0.4+-0.2)GeV^-2c^-2. The intercept alpha_0 and slope alpha' of an effective pomeron trajectory are determined. The W_{gamma p} dependence of the b-slope gives alpha'_b=(0.17+-0.04+-0.01)GeV^-2c^-2. The W_{gamma p} dependence of the differential cross section dsigma/dt yields both parameters: alpha_0=1.21+-0.01+-0.01 and alpha'=(0.14+-0.03+-0.03)GeV^-2c^-2. The two determined slope parameters alpha'_b and alpha' are compatible within errors.
Different theoretical approaches are compared to the data. The single pomeron model based on Regge theory does not describe the strong rise of sigma(W_{gamma p}) as a function of W_{gamma p}. The two pomeron model is able to describe the W_{gamma p} dependence of the cross section sigma(W_{gamma p}) within the kinematic regime of HERA, but is not able to describe the combined results of HERA and of fixed target experiments at low values of W_{gamma p}.
QCD predictions using different parameterisations of the gluon distribution in the proton are also compared to the measured cross section sigma(W_{gamma p}). The predictions show a strong dependence on the gluon distribution, since the gluon distribution enters the cross section quadratically. The comparison to the measured cross section sigma(W_{gamma p}) is therefore a sensitive test for the gluon distributions, which are determined in an indirect way from inclusive measurements. While some of these analyses result in gluon distributions consistent with the J/psi measurements presented here, others can definitely be excluded.

  • Unification of radio-loud AGN
In this thesis we address the subject of the unification of radio-loud Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) (FRI/FRII galaxies, BL Lac objects and quasars) with a statistical and
multiwavelength approach, paying particular attention to the X-ray band which carries precious information on the innermost regions of AGN. A large sample of 2260 AGN of different kinds was created by cross-correlating the ROSAT catalogs with various radio surveys and, for each source, data were collected in the radio, optical and soft X-ray bands. 1682 objects are formally classified as radio-loud and are analyzed in this thesis.
The main purpose of this thesis is to test the unified scheme for radio-loud AGN by investigating if the correlations between luminosities at different frequencies are consistent with the basic assumption that BL Lac objects and radio-loud quasars are relativistically beamed counterparts of FRI and FRII radio galaxies, respectively.
Although this is the key hypothesis of the unification scheme for radio-loud AGN, these questions have not been carefully analyzed so far.
The results of this thesis are in general agreement with the relativistic beaming scenario, however, some complications have been highlighted. Tight relationships between the
nuclear emission in the three wavebands considered are confirmed for all classes and we were able to better constrain the parameters of the correlations due to the larger number of objects compared to previous investigations. However, for FRI galaxies and BL Lac objects, more than one emission component is required, at least in the X-ray band, to explain in a relativistic beaming scenario the different parameters observed for the correlations. One component can easily be associated
with the jet, whereas the other remains so far unknown.
A possible problematic aspect of the unified scheme is that, among the FRI galaxies, the counterparts of Low-energy-peaked BL Lacs have not been found.
Absorption with N_H > 10^{22} cm^{-2} is present in FRII galaxies and plays, together with relativistic beaming, a major role in the unification with radio-loud quasars. Allowing for absorption, only one emission component is required at all frequencies to account for the observed correlations in both classes.
Flat-spectrum quasars (FSRQ) appear to be more beamed than steep-spectrum quasars (SSRQ) only at radio frequencies, but not in the optical and X-ray bands. This might imply that
quasars are disk-dominated in the X-ray and optical band, and jet-dominated at radio frequencies. On the other hand, FRI galaxies and BL Lacs appear to be globally jet-dominated.
A parameter which might account for the FRI/BL Lac - FRII/quasar dichotomy is the accretion rate. At low, sub-Eddington values jets are weak but the emission from them dominates that from the disk and these sources are classified as FRI galaxies or BL Lacs, depending on the viewing angle. At values close to the Eddington limit the disk emission is comparable to that from the jet, which is also more powerful due to the higher accretion rate, and either a FRII galaxy or a radio-loud quasar is produced in this case.

  • Identification of Sources in MAMBO 1.2mm Deep Fields

  • A Near-Infrared Selected Galaxy Redshift Survey
This thesis presents work on galaxy evolution at redshifts 0 < z < 1.5 from a near-infrared selected galaxy redshift survey and much larger optically selected galaxy catalogues where distances were derived from photometric redshifts. Changes in the galaxy population are characterised by the evolution of luminosity functions, luminosity density, star-formation rate density and specific star-formation rate. We find that the galaxy luminosity function changes with increasing redshift in the sense that the characteristic luminosity increases but the number density decreases. This effect is smaller at rest-frame near-infrared wavelengths and gets more pronounced at shorter wavelengths. Furthermore, we use the specific star-formation rate to investigate the build-up of stellar mass in galaxies showing that the most massive galaxies formed the bulk of their stellar population at very early times whereas low-mass galaxies still show ongoing (maybe episodic) star-formation activity.

  • Galaxy Evolution in the Fors Deep Field
Dazu wird jeweils ein FDF B, I, (I+B) und GOODS (Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey) K selektierter Galaxien-Katalog analysiert. • Abundance Tomography of Type Ia Supernovae
Many uncertainties about the physics of Type Ia Supernovae have been revealed in the recent past, and numerous pieces are puzzled together to achieve a complete description of the phenomenon of thermonuclear explosions in the sky. However, very important parts are still missing. In particular, the concept lacks a proper connection between the various evolutionary steps, namely the progenitor scenario, explosion theory, nucleosynthesis from the burning, and the observations. Early time spectra of Type Ia Supernovae naturally contain information about all of these processes and are at the centre of the entire scenario. Appropriate models of that phase can provide the missing link and improve our understanding of this field enormously.
The goal of this thesis is to advance new methods to calculate synthetic spectra in order to extract the information contained in the observations more efficiently. Based on a well established radiation transfer code, a new technique called "Abundance Tomography" is developed to derive the abundance distribution of Type Ia Supernovae ejecta. While previous approaches were limited to the determination of the abundances of specific species in restricted regions of the supernova envelope, here a complete stratified distribution of all major elements is obtained. This method is applied to the very well observed normal SN 2002bo. Combining the early spectra with those of the nebular phase leads to a coverage of the entire ejecta from the centre out to the highest velocities. The abundances derived are used to compute a synthetic bolometric light curve to test the radial distribution of Fe group and intermediate-mass elements.
The sampling procedure of the incident radiation field at the lower boundary is modified to obtain a better description of the real situation in Type Ia Supernovae. This improves the overall flux distribution significantly, especially in the red part of the spectrum, where almost no real line opacity is found. Synthetic spectra with this new procedure reproduce the observations much more accurately, as is shown by models of SN 2002er.
Hydrogen lines have never been detected convincingly in Type Ia Supernovae spectra. However, using spectra that were observed more than 10 days before maximum light, it is shown that small amounts of hydrogen in the outer parts of the ejecta can explain high velocity line absorptions, seen rather frequently in various objects, e.g. SN 2002dj, SN 2003du, and SN 1999ee. The hydrogen is not claimed to be primordial to the white dwarf but it is rather the effect of the supernova ejecta interacting with circumstellar material, namely the white dwarf's accretion disk build up prior to the explosion.
Finally, UV spectra of Type Ia Supernovae are discussed. The ability of the Monte Carlo technique to deal naturally with this wavelength region is proven. Applications are presented by modelling spectra of SN 2001ep and SN 2001eh obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope.
The results are discussed in the broader context of Type Ia Supernovae physics: What causes the diversity in the nearby sample? What are the progenitors and how does the explosion work? What is the influence on cosmological models?
A detailed knowledge of the abundances, their distribution in the Supernova ejecta, and their ultimate causes delivers the key to these fundamental issues.
