  • Nerd & Tie Episode 59: #BringBackThePher
Originally Broadcast 2015/11/01: Hey, it's another podcast's podcast! But it's okay, because it has Vinnk on it. It's almost like a new episode, right? If you like our Doctor Who asides in the regular show, you'll love this one.

On this bigger than ever episode, Vinnk (of FamicomDojo.TV) is sitting in for Pher. We talk about the current state of Pacific Rim 2, the cancellation of Mythbusters, Donna Noble’s Doctor Who Audio Drama return, K-9 getting his own movie, IfCon Victoria disappearing into the night, the 2015 World Fantasy Convention coming to its senses, and SXSW’s complete and total bungling of its anti-Harassment summit.

It’s a really, really long one folks.

What are your favorite scary games? How about just ones that remind you of Halloween, or are about traditional "scary" critters, but are just too darn cute to be scary themselves? Or, depending on what actually scares you, extreme isolation?

Sean and Vinnk invite Sindra and David back to the podcast for this special Halloween episode! And we may or may not discuss the P.T. Silent Hills demo... JUMP SCARE!!

Despite an infamous history of poor titles to overcome, TellTale Games has pulled Back to the Future out of the movie tie-in gaming doldrums to create a worthy addition to the mythos.

SeanOrange and Vinnk talk about their experiences with all of the episodes released so far. At least, as many as they've been able to play. Thanks to the PSN Store being down most of May, not many have been able to play Episode 4 yet (which is no excuse for Sean, since he bought his copy on PC). Just in time for the riveting conclusion! BTTF Episode 5 will be released in June 2011.

  • 116: Nintendo NeXt
Originally Broadcast 2015/03/27: We got news this week that NX dev kits have shipped, but little else concreate. Time to start up the rumor mill again!

Nintendo announced a historic deal with Japanese mobile developer DeNA to create a new device-agnostic ecosystem for its unified account system, an ecosystem that will now also include mobile games. Nintendoes what Sega also does, and is going to develop new software on third party hardware for the first time since Atari. Oh, and then there's something about a new Nintendo NX console too.

Vinnk and Sean wonder if this move is savvy or desperate, meant to appease stockholders, or if they plan to be a gamechanger in the mobile market. We also speculate just exactly what this may presage for their next console. Assuming it ever really comes out. Also, speaking of mobile: the return of Pile of Shame in the form of Fire Emblem and Zelda games for the 3DS!

Ever since Double Fine Adventure (a.k.a. Broken Age), Kickstarter has been the go-to place to fund games in genres long-thought dead (e.g. Adventure Games), by creators long thought dead (e.g. Al Lowe -- kidding! We love ya puddin'), or franchises long thought dead (e.g. the Mega Man-esque Migthy No. 9 by Keiji Inafune). Is this a good thing? And can it possibly last?

Vinnk and Sean discuss their one-night-only Madison Underground live show, including the story of being accosted by a supposedly off-duty Marine while filming some footage for the show. It's a long story, and we totally tell it! We also talk about which Kickstarter games are the most interesting, which ones we've funnded and played, and whether or not having a Wii U stretch goal is an absolute necessity (well, Sean thinks so). We also tried out some "delicious" Pepsi-flavored Cheetos -- complete with video!

Even in the 8-bit days, the theme of time travel in video games was all around us. For some, it was a story excuse to visit historical landmarks and offer. Other explored idea of what it meant to manipulate tiem Usually, they were some poorly-designed movie tie-in. But each one offered an unmentioned promise that someday, somewhen, the ultimate time travel game would arise. Now, if only someone would invent actual time travel and send that game back to us in time for this episode!

Vinnk and Sean discuss their favorite (and sometimes not-so-favorite) time travel games, what they did right, what they could have done better, and spend probably too much time gushing about Presto Studio's The Journeyman Project and bolstering the merits of the 1996 Doctor Who movie on Fox starring Paul McGann. But, mostly, it's about games. And we somehow forgot to mention Shadow of Destiny... (Don't worry; we'll try to cover that in the show notes.)
