In this episode, Laura< Krysta and Dean sort through the history of and surrounding the Radium Girls. But first, Krysta has facts about the fast fashion industry and how it's a lot more harmful to the environment than most people know. Dean suggest his theory that his clothing purchases have a lifetime contract with him as being so he doesn't add to the environmental harms of fast fashion. Laura calls bull on this idea and refuses to entertain it. From there, the trio go on to discuss the Radium girls and how five womenwere largely the reason the US government created OSHA, to protect workers who had been lied to or left unprotected by their employers. This week Laura, Krysta and Dean discuss the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, but first Krysta gives us some weird facts about potatoes and other similar tubers. Once we get done digging into that topic (what I did there, did you see it?) we go into the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. The building of this facility was initiated in 1851. However, with the Civil War, the Virginia legislature attempted to take the money for it's continued construction and put it into their defense as they seceded from the Union. However, those funds had already been withdrawn by Union Troops and taken to Wheeling, which led to the statehood of West Virginia. After this military start, the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum went on to become a place that under many names attempted to treat the mentally ill, though often the cures were worse than the disease. Once we cover the history of the place we discuss ghosts and paranormal entities that live on site. And we also discuss television showws that have reported on ghostly events there as well as a video game that has an entire area based on the hospital. In the early morning hours of August 8th 1963, 16 men stopped and robbed the Royal Mail Train from Glasgow to London. The men drove away with roughly 2.3 million Emglish Pounds (worth close to 30 million today). We get into all of that, but first Krysta has some facts in honor of International Woman's Day! Krysta gives us somewhere between six and seven facts and then off we go. First we look at the robbers themselves, then we look at their plan and in some ways, just how lucky they were. We also discuss the failures of the men to properly clean the farm where they laid low and how they failed to torch it. In the end a ketchup bottle and a Monopoly board spell doom for most of the robbers involved...but most of the money is never recovered. We talk about her interesting life, the tragedies she suffered which led to her search for spiritualists who agreed with her that the victims of those killed by Winchester Rifles sought to do the family harm. So Sarah, with various spiritualists and mediums at her side found a farmhouse in San Jose California that she grew into a 160 room mansion.
