The Fourth of July week means lots of new movies to choose from!  Our big movie is "Despicable Me 4" which, while fun, also seems to be at a story end for our main characters. A great, uplifting movie is also in theaters:  "Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot," in which an entire town works together to adopt all 77 of the foster kids in the system. Fans of Eddie Murphy will want to check out "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F." on Netflix, which reunites all living cast members for another go-around. Also on Netflix, you can't go wrong with the animated movie "The Imaginary," which has Japanese-style hand-drawn animation and tells a story similar to the film "IF" but done better (in my opinion). Finally, it's silly but fun:  "Space Cadet," on Prime Video, sees a free-spirited Florida woman (Emma Roberts) get a chance to live her lifelong dream of training to be an astronaut. It's like the 80s movie " Space Camp," but for Gen Z and Alpha.

The 1960s and 70s motorcycle culture is celebrated in“The Bikeriders,” which hits the road and theater screens this week. Andy says it's worth it for Jodie Comer's amazing Midwest accent alone! As unreal as it sounds, "Thelma" is an action movie starring 93-year-old June Squibb as a grandmother who gets phone scammed out of $10K, so she goes to get it back. And it's a fan-fave at Sundance this year! Another Sundance 2024 film, and Andy’s favorite this week, is “Ghostlight,” where a family struggling to deal with personal trauma finds unexpected connections when they get pulled into a community theater production of "Romeo & Juliet." And if you are a Celine Dion fan, you'll probably want to check out "I AM: Celine Dion" in theaters before it hits streaming on Amazon Prime Video next week.

'Inside Out 2' is the latest Disney/Pixar sequel. This time, our beloved starring character, Riley, whom we fell in love with in 2015's "Inside Out," has reached her teenage years, and the emotions that live in her head are getting more complex as she faces new social-emotional challenges. In this episode of Fan Effect, we review and then take a deep look at the sequel with two knowledgeable guests. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of May 31, 2024. “Young Woman and the Sea” is a Daisy Ridley film the whole family can enjoy together, while  "Ezra" is just as emotional but for a more grown-up audience. It’s about parents trying to raise their autistic son and not mess him up with their own issues. A message most parents can relate to.  Also in theaters is "Summer Camp," a movie with three talented older actresses try and show they can be just as crude as the boys. It’s a problematic comedy that’s just not funny. 

If you remember having a MoviePass subscription drama, check out "MoviePass, MovieCrash" streaming on HBO.  It's a documentary about the rise and fall of the "any movie, any theater, any day" subscription service that burned so brightly, but burned out so quickly.

The latest adaptation of the Planet of the Apes movie saga, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” has outstanding visuals and a surprisingly engaging story. (Check out Steve Salles review here!)  The best thing Andy watched this week was "Nowhere Special," a movie about a terminally ill single father in Ireland who is forced to interview potential adoptive families for his 4-year-old son to live with after he passes. With limited showings at the Megaplex Jordan Commons and the Broadway Centre Cinemas, it's worth the effort to catch a showing. 

For streaming, there's a series on AppleTVPlus called "Dark Matter" is an interesting sci-fi tale: A physicist gets mugged one night, and when he wakes up, nothing in his life is like it was just hours before. And Mother of the Bride" on Netflix poorly-cast Brooke Shields as a brides mother dealing with an awkward situation.
