Following an outstanding college career at Miami University in Ohio, Smith was selected in the second round of the 1976 draft, making him the first offensive player picked by the new expansion team in its inaugural season.

    Following a productive nine-year playing career, Smith transitioned into coaching and went on to develop some of the best running backs in the NFL, including Eddie George, Clinton Portis and Marshawn Lynch.
