The raiding party is thwarted by the alchemist.  Peter of the Button Face escapes, but not without injury.

The evil Peter conspires with Stas to break into Pan Andrew's home while he is away in order to steal his treasure.

Unbeknownst to Joseph and Elzbietka, sinister forces have been tracking them and planning to do harm to Pan Andrew's family.

Strange happenings are perceived by Joseph in the loft of the fourth floor.  He climbs the steep stairs to see what the alchemist Kreutz and the student Tring are up to.

Joseph's father Pan Andrew takes him along on his first night as watchman and trumpeter.  There he tells him of the brave young man who was trumpeter years ago.  When Pan Andrew sends Joseph home, Joseph is greeted by a mysterious stranger who warns him to beware of the student Tring.

After saving Elzbietka from the savage dog, Joseph goes with her and her uncle to see their humble dwelling.  Meanwhile, out in the marketplace, Pan Andrew and wife are being accosted by a band of charlatans.  Just in time, a mysterious stranger comes to their rescue.

Joseph and his father and mother enter the city, only to hear bad news.  Joseph wanders through the city and rescues a wise man and his beautiful niece.

Traveling along the road to Krakow, a small family is accosted by a stranger who pretends to be their friend, but instead tries to take their pumpkin by force.
