Today Lisa and Rachel delve into the delightful topic of partial and plenary indulgences! What is it that we are indulging in? We are indulging in the endless ocean of God's mercy! Lisa and Rachel begin with the historical background of indulgences, dispel common myths about them, and surmise why they have been sadly de-emphasized by the Church in the last few decades. Lisa outlines the usual requirements to receive an indulgence, and together Rachel and Lisa explain how the "conditions" for an indulgence are to be understood as "spiritual strength conditioning" to develop a rock solid foundation in your interior life. They discuss how we can receive up to one plenary indulgence a day, how we can apply it to the soul of a deceased loved one if we'd prefer, and how there are 4 easy pious acts we can do every day to be open to this receiving!

In this episode, Lisa and Rachel share their thoughts on the sad reality of temporal punishment or the natural consequences of our sins. They speak about the mercy of Purgatory but contrast that with our ability to make amends NOW, through prayer, fasting, almsgiving, the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, accepting with patience the suffering of the ills of this life, directly apologizing to others, and doing all that we can to "make things right." Their lively conversation sets the stage for an introduction to indulgences. In this episode, indulgences are defined and in the next episode, we'll delve deep into the true understanding of what it means to indulge in God's mercy! We don't want to harp on sin, but sin is a real thing in our lives, so we should talk about it, right?! Today Lisa and Rachel contrast God's Perfect Will to His Permissive Will for our lives. They discuss original sin as not trusting the goodness of God, and explain how Baptism gives us the gift of God's life within us! They define what sin is, discuss the degrees of sin as either venial or mortal, and explain how grace unites us to God! The episode begins with Lisa clarifying a few things from her previous solo episode, The Art of Dying Well. She defines the particular judgement, the final judgement, and the purpose of purgatory. Stay tuned for Part 2 of this episode, where Lisa and Rachel will joyfully answer the question of, "How do we get out of a state of mortal sin if we are in it?" In this solo episode, Lisa shares her notes from a riveting presentation she attended recently, given by Father Arena on the "Art of the Dying Well." Lisa talks about how God designed us as souls enfleshed, how death is the separation of soul and body, and how it is truly a cosmic tragedy, resulting from sin being in this world. She shares how Our Lord has claimed death, broken its power, and now uses it to bring souls back to Himself, for now death is a remedy for sin instead of a punishment for it. Lisa speaks of the two powers of the soul being the will and the intellect, why we should pray for the souls in Purgatory, and how the saints in Heaven are perfectly united to the Body of Christ!
