  • Missional Communities
What does it look like to be a missional community that is real with each other and active on God’s mission? That’s what this sermon is all about.
You can't play a match of ping pong on your own. A quarterback without anyone to throw the ball to wouldn’t get many touchdowns. A soccer player with no goalie is sunk. A Christian without community is the same way. Following Jesus is not an individual sport, and in fact the gospel is powerfully communicated through community.
We explore the book of Hebrews, and you'll see how gathering together in community is critical to the Christian life.

  • Mother's Day 2018
From the very beginning of time, women have made enormous contributions to God's kingdom. In the Bible we see women working both behind the scenes in quiet ways and as outstanding leaders shaping the very course of gospel history.
This is one of our most requested sermons and reflects our pursuit to see every single person fully equipped as a disciple of Jesus.
You’ll rarely get a chance here at First B to hear the same message, but for this Mother’s Day, we’ve asked Pastor Ben if he would bring this message to us again.
It will be an impactful morning to learn about the unique attributes of God's image expressed in women, as we appreciate moms and honor every single woman in our church.

  • Bad "Good News"
After Saul’s horrendous decision to go to a witch for help, the wheels absolutely fall off.
In this Sunday’s passage, the book of 1 Samuel closes with a gruesome scene that is anything but a happy ending.
The army of Israel faces massive loss. King Saul and his sons are dead. The enemy has won, taking over major ground.
Worst of all, God’s name and his reputation are diminished as pagan gods are worshipped and elevated for the conquering of God’s people.
As we learn in this passage, the defeat of God’s people has a connection to God’s glory, which directly affects how we live today. When we fail to live in the freedom Jesus bought for us remain enslaved to sin, it not only affects our own life, but it also impacts God’s reputation.
But even in this defeat, God is up to something. You can't see it at the end of 1 Samuel, but as we'll see next Fall in 2 Samuel, God is always at work for his people.

  • Crises in Contrast
In this week’s episode of 1 Samuel, King Saul is in a terrible predicament. The Philistines are gearing up for war against him–David is with them–and God is not answering.
Last week we looked at David’s response to pressure, and this Sunday we see how Saul reacts to a crisis of his own.
At first, Saul seeks God’s guidance. But when God is silent, Saul comes up with a shocking plan:
Saul disguises himself and goes undercover to a witch for help.
In this strange passage of Scripture, Saul shows his total disregard for God and completely shatters his reign as king.
As Saul spirals, we see how God rescues David from fighting for the Philistines and prepares him to return, as God continues to work in and through his flawed people.

  • Better Vision
You know that moment that can happen in a conversation when you say something that just comes out wrong?
And the more you try to explain, you find yourself digging deeper and deeper into a hole!
In this week’s episode of 1 Samuel, David finds himself digging a hole that gets way deeper than he could have expected.
After being continually hunted by Saul, David loses heart and decides to leave his country and his future kingdom behind.
At first his plan seems to work, but as the chapter unfolds, things get ugly.
As we look at David’s life and the mess he landed in, we’ll learn how to stay the course with God and how to keep a Gospel-centered vision for our lives
