Jesus responded to skepticism and rejection from His own disciples and teaches them that they must seek the interest of God the Father and not of Satan.

Isaiah 35:3 - 10

Jesus taught His disciples about faith, trust, and the dangers of spiritual pride. Reflecting on the miracles of feeding the multitudes, and the disciples’ struggle to understand. Jesus’ warning to beware the influence of the Pharisees and Herod.

Mark 8:1 – 3 Jesus wants to feed the crowd before He sends them home, so they don’t faint

Mark 8:4 Disciples say no one could find enough bread in this desolate place

Mark 8:6 & 7 Jesus had the people sit down, He gives the disciples the bread and some fish, and they distribute it to the people

Mark 8:8 & 9 4,000 people ate and were satisfied and yet 7 large baskets were left

Mark 8:11 - 13 Pharisees challenge Jesus and demand a sign, but Jesus refuses

Far beyond plenty good enough. Jesus’ compassion and power exceeded everyone’s expectations when He healed a man who was deaf. Do not limit God, not in our prayers, not in our worship. But instead let Him answer in His way.

Mark 7:31 Jesus travels through Tyre, Sidon and the Decapolis

Mark 7:32 They bring to Jesus a deaf man who also has difficulty speaking

Mark 7:33 & 34 Jesus takes him away from the multitude. Jesus then puts His fingers in the man’s ears and puts His saliva on the man’s tongue and said “Be opened”

Mark 7:35 The man hears and is able to speak plainly

Mark 7:36 Jesus orders them not to tell anyone, but the more He orders them, the more they continue to proclaim

Mark 7:37 They say that He has done all things well and makes even the deaf to hear ant the mute to speak

A mother's humble persistence moves Jesus to act. What do we do when God says "no" or seems silent? The importance of humility in our prayers and faith, even when faced with disappointment or apparent rejection.

Mark 7:25 & 26 A gentile woman keeps asking Jesus to cast out a demon from her daughter

Mark 7:27 Jesus tells her “the children” (the Jews) must be satisfied first and not throw it to the dogs

Mark 7:28 The woman responds that the “dogs eat the crumbs from the table

Mark 7:29 & 30 Jesus tells her “because of her response her daughter’s demon possession is gone, and she sees it so

Tradition and true faith from the teachings of Jesus. Traditions can both enrich and hinder our spiritual lives. Jesus calls us to focus on the condition of our hearts rather than outward rituals.

Mark 7:5 Pharisees and scribes criticize Jesus’ disciples for not following tradition of washing

Mark 7:6 – 8 Jesus states that prophesy has been fulfilled

Mark 7:9 – 13 Jesus gives examples how they have set aside God’s word for their traditions

Mark 7:14 & 15 Jesus teaches the crowd what defiles a person

Mark 7:17 – 23 Disciples do not understand so Jesus teaches them further on it is what comes out of you not what goes into you

Contrast the responses of the crowd, the disciples, and Jesus Himself. Why did the crowd want to make Jesus' king? Why did the disciples struggle to understand despite witnessing countless miracles? And what can we learn from Jesus' choice to retreat in prayer after such a monumental event?

Mark 6:45 & 46 Jesus sends His disciples and then sends the multitude away and went to pray

Mark 6:48 The disciples are having a difficult time crossing the sea, but Jesus walks on the water planning on meeting them on the other side

Mark 6:49 – 52 Disciples think Jesus is a ghost and cry out. Jesus enters the boat and they are astonished. They gained no insight from the loaves and fish miracle

Mark 6:53 – 56 Jesus continues His ministry and the people bring the sick wanting to be healed by Him

The feeding of 5,000 is present in all four Gospels. Mark writes to use explaining how Jesus demonstrates compassion for a crowd. Through the miracle of the 5,000 we learn about the disciples' role, the importance of faith, and the lesson that ministry is not about the resources we have but about who we serve.

Mark 6:43 & 44 There are more bread (12 baskets full) and fish than when they started, but 5,000 men were fed
