Gen X Childhood Fears: Quicksand, Killer Bees & Acid Rain

Remember when we thought quicksand was going to kill us? 🏃‍♀️ When killer bees were coming for us, acid rain was going to melt us, and swallowing gum meant it would live in our stomachs for SEVEN YEARS?

Welcome to Gen X childhood, where we were terrified of pretty much everything. 😂

This week on Feedbag Podcast, Nat and Rupert revisit the ridiculous dangers we grew up believing would be the end of us. From Pop Rocks and Coke EXPLODING our stomachs to razor blades in Halloween candy, piranhas, satanic messages hidden in music, and the terrifying hole in the ozone layer, we believed some WILD things.

And while we were busy worrying about killer bees and quicksand, we were riding around in cars without seatbelts, playing outside until the streetlights came on, and basically raising ourselves. Make it make sense.

We also share some deeply questionable childhood fears of our own. Including one involving lightning and bears. Yes, really. 🐻

This week on Feedbag, we’re back from a little getaway to Prince Edward County - and the conversation immediately turns to Gen X midlife - sleep disorders, bed rails, farts, packing disasters, questionable fatherly advice, and bird-related rage.

Rupert tells the terrifying story of acting out a dream in his sleep, resulting in a very real collision with his nightstand, a trip to the hospital, and the installation of toddler bed rails on a king-size bed.

Nat talks about the realities of midlife sleep: night sweats, blackout curtains, body pillows, fans, AC, mouth guards—and the sheer amount of equipment required just to get through the night.

Then things take a decidedly less medical turn as we discuss farting, famous family farts, the mysterious physics of farting while sitting down, and the unforgettable moment when Nat’s fart apparently sounded like a cat.
