  • Ep 108. New Mini Series - The Freelancer's Starter Kit - Introduction

    Dear Feisworld Listeners,

Welcome to our new Mini Series called the 2017 Freelancer's Starter Kit!

When I introduce myself as a podcaster to new friends on and off of the show, the most frequently asked questions is, "Are you a full time podcaster?"

    The answer is: No.

I am a freelancer. Specifically, I work as a digital marketer and project manager when I'm not recording for Feisworld. And I love what I do.

This mini series is an attempt to build upon #freelanceLIVE, a 10-day series I recorded on our Facebook page in 2016, which has over 10,000 views.

To respect everyone's time, we will limit each episode to be between 5-10 minutes.

We will cover popular topics related to freelancing from "Getting Started" to "Being in the Trenches":

    • Freelancers vs. Entrepreneurs
    • How to Get Started When You Have No Idea
    • Questions You Need to Ask Yourself (before freelancing)
    • Myth and Truth
    • Health Insurance for Freelancers
    • How to Get Clients (approach and close a client)
    • Rapid-fire Questions from Listeners
    • Spotting Good vs. Bad Clients
    • Best Tools, Resources for Freelancers (contracts, invoicing, time tracking)
    • Getting Stuff Done! (GSD)

All the resources mentioned in this series including people, links, workbooks can be found right here on feisworld.com/freelance.

    Talk soon,

    Fei

  • Ep 106. Roman Tomanov: Born with a Set of Straps - Then and Now.

Roman Tomanov (@romantomanov) was born in Moscow, Russia inside a circus family. His father was his coach. He began public performances at the age of 5.

After immigrating to the US (and resideing in Las Vegas at a young age), Roman has performed with the largest theatrical production company in the world, Cirque du Soleil. His most recent appearance is with KURIOS the Cabinet of Curiosities.

In addition to aerial acts, Roman is a trained performer in bungee, trampowall, flying harness, break dance and movie stunts.

What’s interesting about this conversation is that Roman and I didn’t intend it to be a podcast episode. Therefore you’ll find the style a bit different than pervious episodes, my questions are shorter, so are Roman’s answers in many cases. Rapid fire Q&A

  • Ep 105. Anny Laplante: Flying with Style to a New Creation in Circus 1903

This week on Feisworld, we are joined by a lovely young lady named Anny Laplante.

Anny is a "flyer" currently performing with Circus 1903 in a breathtaking act called Russian Cradle Duo.

Russian Cradle Duo is a famously known circus act, where the aerialist being propelled is referred to as a "flyer" (that's Anny), while the one doing the tossing and catching is referred to as a "carrier" (or "catcher"). The flyer usually starts and ends by standing on the frame above the catcher. The flyer then swings holding on to the catcher’s hands, performs releases at the top of the swing, and is re-caught in mid-air.

There are many technical aspects in terms of the strength and speed required for the tossing and throwing to be possible. Needless to say that this act is very challenging and dangerous.

I was covered with tears when I first watched Anny perform in one of my favorite Cirque du Soleil show called KURIOS. I cried again the second and third time. Anny's act felt vulnerable, pure, and brave. In our conversation today, we'll take you inside the circus world and beyond.

  • Ep 104. David Williamson: Ringmaster of Circus 1903, Close-up Magician, Applied Psychologist

David is currently touring in the US in a circus called Circus 1903,  a brand new show from the producers of The Illusionists and the puppeteers of War Horse. It's a fun celebration of the golden age of circus. Their most recent stop was in Boston, MA. (Feisworld HQ!)

I fell in love with David's performance instantly. The audience was naturally and completely captivated by his words, his humor, and his incredible talent of improvising with children ages 5-9 on stage.

To my surprise, David isn't a trained ringmaster, but a professional magician. He has been featured on ABC's Champions of Magic, where he appeared with Princess Stephanie as he performed his miracles at different locations in and around Monaco.

Working as a magician is a career very few people can pull off.

How did David become a magician and sustain a career for decades? What are the words of wisdom he'd like to pass onto our younger generation?

David is going to unveil the world of magic to you, and the life of performing with a Circus.

  • Ep 103. Gustavo Serafini: I can do it so can you

Gustavo Serafini is an entrepreneur and co-founder of Pure Audio Video., a company that specializes in designing and integrating home cinemas, automation and security systems for luxury homes.

Gustavo and I met through altMBA ("alternative MBA"), founded by one of my favorite teachers, Seth Godin.

Over the course of 4 weeks including nights and weekends, we connected with dozens of likeminded people, learning about business and life.

"Where others see obstacles, Gustavo sees opportunity. Gustavo consistently challenges himself to overcome the obstacles in his life, while inspiring others to do the same. As a successful entrepreneur, Gustavo overcame the odds of a historic recession and a host of naysayers. He finds joy in opportunity. He knows that difficulty will never outshine persistence, belief, and courage. His motto is: If I can do it, so can you." - Gustavo Serafini

Originally from Brazil, Gustavo's family moved to the States when he was still a baby. Born with proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD), Gustavo had to learn how to walk and live like other kids at a very young page.

Fast forward a few decades, Gustavo is now a successful entrepreneur who co-owns Pure Audio Video with his brother. We chatted about his startup days and how he overcame the economic crisis in the US in 2008. From studying buddhism, to going to law school, Gustavo transformed himself in pursuing endeavors that I couldn't help learning more about.
