Today we look at the conversation from John 4 where Jesus encounters an unnamed Samaritan woman at a well. What seems an innocent enough conversation to modern people, for a Jewish man to speak with a Samaritan woman would have been a scandal indeed. Jesus breaks through social conventions and points her to living water.

In the first of our Holden Evening Vespers services during this season of Lent, we are exploring the practice of "apophatic" prayer. Often we think of prayer as talking with God, but throughout the centuries different types of prayer have been explored. Apophatic prayer invites us to listen for God in the silence, to hear and feel the Spirit of God moving in ways deeper than words. 

During the homily pastor Farrow invites us into this practice of embracing God in the silence. From the timestamp 10:15 - 14:35 we are given the opportunity to practice this style of prayer. Consider using that time of silence to be open to God moving in your life.

"The wilderness is a place of preparation, it's a place where people go to wait for God's next move - a place where they learn to trust God's mercy. But it is also a place of temptation." The season of Lent, those 6 weeks between Ash Wednesday and Easter, is a time to spiritually spend in the "valley" or "wilderness," where we remind ourselves that we continually trust in God's promises.

Wednesday, Feb. 26th was the beginning of the Lenten season. Called "Ash Wednesday," many traditions take ashes from the previous year's palm branches from Palm Sunday and use them to put the sign of the cross on the forehead. It is a sober reminder of our mortality and reminds us of the hope that we look to in the Easter Resurrection of Jesus. 

Listen as Pastor Fox encourages us not to pray for three specific things, but rather to be open to how God might be shaping our lives.

Many of us have had "mountaintop experiences," where we feel as though we've encountered the divine. Just as Jesus' disciples saw him transfigured before them on the mountain, we often hold on to these experiences as we go out into our daily lives.

As we look back on Valentine's Day, many of us are left with a sense of relief that the day is past. Perhaps it brings up some hidden hurt, or the pressure to surprise our loved ones can weigh us down. Is there more to love than simply buying chocolates, flowers, and a nice dinner?

Wisdom can be found in many places, even from those domesticated friends like cats. In 'Alice and Wonderland,' Alice finds herself asking directions from the Cheshire Cat. We, too, often find ourselves in a strange place or crossroads, and we need to stop and ask for directions.

There are virtual assistants all around us these days. They can answer simple math questions, tell you about geography, tell you a joke, or even turn on and off your lights and control your home. They really are a technological marvel! 

Yet, for all their usefulness, there are still a lot of things that Alexa can't tell us, questions she can't answer.
