One of the most fascinating things about the Old Testament is how it points to Jesus Christ. In this passage, we see two types of kings. The first is fashioned after the fallen first king, Adam. But the second was a type of the perfect king to come. David operates in Scripture as Israel's king- the man after God's own heart. But he was only a type, as his sins and failures showed all too clearly. Yet in his life of faith we are pointed forward to the ultimate, good, beautiful, and perfect King Jesus.

Romans 8 is a continuation of Romans 5:12-21. It deals with the certainty of salvation. Chapters 5 and 8 deal with the same process. Paul writes on the ultimate assurance of the perseveration of the saints. We are now in Christ Jesus, no longer under the law. We will start with a review of Chapters 6 and 7, both dealing with issues Paul brought up in chapter 5

Does Romans 7-1-24 apply to you-- Are you bound by the Law-- Are you more like a Pharisee, trying to live by the law-- Is this Pauls experience at his best-- -Or do we mirror Romans 8-1-2-- Those who know Christ Jesus face no condemnation. We then have the Spirit.

When trouble comes and life is unpleasant, we all deeply desire to be rescued. In this section of I Samuel, David was in a dangerous predicament. God, in his providence, provided a way of escape from many dangers, bringing David and his family safely through. While we cannot always assume we will be physically rescued in this world, we can know for certain that we will be ultimately rescued. Jesus has rescued us, is rescuing us, and will finally deliver us into glory. On this sure promise rests the Christian's hope- the hope of Jesus Christ.

And so today we are tasking ourselves with an attempt to decide whether this section of scripture is a reference to the unregenerate man, or to a regenerate man; regenerate to the extent that this is Paul referring to himself at the time of the writing of this letter which is as we have said the reformed majority exposition of this passage; or is it a reference to an immature Christian. And so on last week we made an effort to see if there were other passages in Scripture which would illuminate the matter. We looked at the passages that are the most often used by commentators as parallel statements to the one we are studying. But I think we can agree that the passages used while they on the surface appear to describe the same conflict and the same state of misery, they are not at all parallels to what we find in this section. What is our next step? It will be to show that if this passage is in fact describing Paul's experience at his best and highest, even at the point of writing this Epistle to the Roman Church, then this passage is totally incompatible with his plain teaching elsewhere, in this epistle as well as other Epistles he wrote and even incompatible with other writers concerning the nature of the regenerate man. So as I said we will have a lot of Scripture references today. Firstly the passages found in the writings of Paul himself, which we are allowing exclude the possibility that he is describing his own mature Christian experience here in Romans 7. We will look first at Paul's other statements in this letter and the evidence is overwhelming at least to me. See PDF section for references

Here in the opening of vs 25, Paul is emotional as he expresses thanks or gratitude for what Jesus has done.-Paul did not thank God for serving the law or serving sin.-Here is a duality of mes. Here the word serve is to be a slave to.-The question here is can a regenerate man make these statements in verse 25--

In this passage we see a profound lesson on the surety of God's holy Word. It is ever binding and unchanging. For those separated from God's grace, that is a terrifying prospect, because every promise of judgement will stand. But for those in Christ, who have been declared righteous by his blood, it is a promise of sure rescue. Brothers and sisters, the Word of God stands so take heed.
