Shannon Keye was theater, became business, and is now comedy. Shannon talks about the road to finding standup comedy and how she approaches developing those skills (crowd work, morning pages, et cetera) in this anxiety riddled city.
Catch Shannon hosting a Sunday brunch comedy show at the Comedy Shop in the west village!

Opening bit: When Chris's brother came out
Chris Metcalfe is a comedy performance powerhouse. Watching his standup is a true thrill; his persona is brash and his energy is electric. Chris talks about being from New Jersey (okay saaaaame!), and moving to Australia right after college. (I had no idea there was a US to AUS lifeguard pipeline). Chris also gets "esoteric and heady" (his words) talking about his approach and philosophy toward the pursuit of standup comedy. This was one of those "conversations about comedy" that was so much fun to have because we just give a shit about it!

Opening bit: Grace is bad at flirting.
After five years in finance and an almost-pivot to a career as a pastor, Grace Leishman moved to Chicago to explore the world of comedy. Since then she's moved back to New York and continues to grow and excel as a comedy writer and performer. In this conversation Grace talks about her experience at circus camp (camper *and* staff!), loving SNL, and being religious (Church ripppps, in fact).

Whether it's improvised episodes of Columbo or standup comedy, Pat Monaghan is a brilliant performer to watch. In this conversation Pat talks about growing up in NJ with a gecko, being a drama kid, going to college in NC for theater, and eventually finding comedy. Big congrats to Pat for performing his hour at the Idiot Box in Greensboro, NC!

Mika Stein is a standup comic based in Brooklyn. In this ep Mika talks about growing up Black and Jewish in Texas; being an only child of a single mom; the peculiarities of Jewish identity; and encountering Zionism (at NYU) (and unlearning it vis-a-vis... Barack Obama?!). Mika and I talked through the different "Jewish values" we absorbed from our respective backgrounds -- which is one of my favorite kinds of conversations to have. Mika also talks about how he found comedy (shout out to his fav Tig Notaro).
