Females in Fantasy

L. Stephanie Tait, a director, author, and podcaster, joins me to talk about the stigma against women making sci-fi/fantasy movies, the rampant sexism in the film industry, and how to (hopefully) fix the whole mess. Plus, all about her podcast, Sisters of Sci-Fi!

CW: Stephanie shares a true story involving violence against a woman on a film set, and it's kind of disturbing, so just be aware.

Natasha Ngan joins me to talk about GIRLS OF PAPER AND FIRE, her upcoming Asian-inspired high fantasy novel. We discuss the recent influx of diverse fantasy books, and the controversy around writing cultures that are, or are not, "your own". Also, we explore how stories about heroines in patriarchal fantasy worlds can be just as empowering as those set in egalitarian worlds.

**Trigger warning** We talk in broad terms about sexual assault, and how it can be a very relevant topic for young readers.

Kameron Hurley, author of The Stars Are Legion, The Geek Feminist Revolution, God's War, and many other epic books, joins me to talk about female warriors — and their frequent erasure from our narratives.

Is it "realistic" to write about badass female fighters? What can we learn about the roles of women in war, and in society at large, by looking at history, cultures throughout the world, and the very real women who surround us in our everyday lives?

All this and more in today's episode.
