Femme & Furious: A Feminist Pop Culture Podcast episodes

  • Fast 5: 'Obsession', 'The Drama', 'Odyssey', 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day', 'Sterling Point', 'Girl's Girl'

Summary: This week on Femme & Furious, we're breaking our own format because while it's technically a "Fast 5," we've got six properties on deck, because there was too much good pop culture to cover this month. Spoiler-free pitches up top for each one, then we go all the way in with spoilers, feminist analysis, and a few unhinged theories.

    What I'm covering:

    • Obsession — the viral horror hit that outran Supergirl in theaters, the "man or the bear" discourse hiding in plain sight, and why Bear is absolutely a dog guy.
    • The Drama — Zendaya and Robert Pattinson's wedding-week-gone-wrong dark comedy from Kristoffer Borgli, and the racial double standard baked into who gets forgiven for what.
    • Odyssey — Christopher Nolan's mythic epic, the Emily Wilson feud, and a full breakdown of Circe, Calypso, Helen, Clytemnestra, and a theory about who Athena really is.
    • Spider-Man: Brand New Day — Tom Holland's loneliest Peter Parker yet, the Frank Castle friendship that's carrying the movie, and a hard pass on that Little Caesars order.
    • Sterling Point — Amazon's CW-coded YA drama, a love triangle the writing doesn't quite earn, and the most joyful period scene we've seen on TV ever.
    • Girl's Girl by Sonia Feldman — one of my favorite books of the year, a queer coming-of-age story about girlhood, friendship, and phones as a silent second language. You can support the pod by buying it here: https://linkly.link/2qY8F

  • 'House of the Dragon' The Treasons at Tumbleton

Summary: The Treasons at Tumbleton is a banger of a season finale for House of the Dragon, but a tough time to find yourself on Team Black. Rhaenyra decides to go full throttle on her Mad King Era; Baela & Helaena are calling out uncool behavior, Daemon (as always) is giving daddy, and Aegon is alive and looking for a fight. In a world of signs and omens, Rhaenyra has to literally shed her skin and become the prince that was promised. Or, more prominently, the Queen that was feared. We're diving into it in this episode of Femme & Furious!

  • 'The Love Hypothesis' Quickie

Summary: In this episode of Femme & Furious, we take a quick look at the feminist themes explored in The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood. This is a BookTok staple romance that belongs there for all the right reasons: A smart female lead, a brooding but love-stricken male lead, and a plethora of feminist themes, including agency, power dynamics, and an examination of the institutional hurdles women face in a professional/academic setting. This is just a quick look at the book and its themes ahead of the movie release on Amazon Prime Video this September!

If you are looking for 'Glow of the Everflame' 16-30, my apologies. I needed some serious time off. We will be continuing this Friday and will catch up next week. Thank you for your patience and understanding!

  • 'House of the Dragon' Faceless Men & The Dragon in Winter Quickie

Summary: Femme & Furious journey ever onward in Westeros as we dive into episodes 6 (Faceless Men) and 7 (The Dragon in Winter) of House of the Dragon. In this episode, we'll gush over Daddy Daemon (obviously), dive into the maniacal parallels between Rhaenyra and Aegon, avoid kink-shaming Aemond, and dive into motherhood as a weapon in King's Landing.

  • 'Glow of the Everflame' Chapters 1-15

Summary: Long Live the Queen. Diem Bellator is the new crown of Lumnos, but that doesn't immediately grant her powers. Diem enters the world of the Descended, where she begins to learn more about her magic as she builds a growing relationship with a small portion of the Corbois Clan. In this episode of Femme & Furious, we dive into all of the gender politics, messy momma drama, and the pressure Diem experiences as she learns court expectations in Penn Cole's second installment of the Kindred's Curse saga: Glow of the Everflame

  • 'House of the Dragon' Unbowed and Unbent Slay-by-Slay

Summary: House of the Dragon continues to deliver banger after banger, and the trend continues with Unbowed and Unbent. We have mommy issues galore, Westerosi abortion advocacy, and the continual exploration of what the moral responsibility of motherhood entails. Also, not sure if you've heard, but there are cats in the Red Keep and skinchangers(????) at Harrenhal. We have wounded male egos and the denial of feminine intuition, plus so much more on this episode of the pod

Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole ends with not one but two big plot twists: Diem is descended, and Auralie is alive. In this episode of the podcast, we're diving into all of the rich feminist themes: autonomy, beauty standards, Diem's growing need to forge her own path, and, of course, the love of my life, Luther Corbois.

This is a story about fate, prophecy, and a super badass woman named Diem Bellator. In this episode, we dive into conversations about race, gender, and class hindrances to Diem, as well as her growing resentment towards her mother, who has lied to Diem and has kept her (potentially) unnecessarily medicated. If you love chatting about helicopter moms, Christian nationalism, men and their role in contraception, and the camaraderie of women in impoverished areas, then join me as we begin to unravel the Kindred's Curse.
