  • Sea Otter | Drift and The Forest Under the Waves

A gentle bedtime story from the Fenekie Explorer Club.

Tonight you go somewhere very wild: a kelp forest off the California coast, taller than a house and golden all the way down. There you meet Drift, a sea otter who sleeps on his back with a rope of kelp tied around his middle and a paw resting on the otter beside him, so the sea can never carry him off alone.

Then one big swell rolls through, and Drift wakes up in the fog with his kelp gone and no paw beside him. Somewhere out there in the grey, an old friend is calling for help, and Drift has to swim toward the sound with nothing to keep him warm but his own coat, listening for the whisper of kelp that might lead them both home.

Soft voice, slow pace, warm light. Made for the wind-down before sleep.

Made for families to listen to together.

1% of every purchase goes to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Sea Otter Program, which rescues stranded sea otters and raises orphaned pups to return to the wild.

  • Tardigrade | Dewey and The Longest Nap

A gentle bedtime story from the Fenekie Explorer Club.

Tonight you go somewhere very small: a patch of moss on a garden wall, no wider than your hand, which up close turns out to be a whole forest with leaf-trees taller than a house. There you meet Dewey, a tardigrade about the size of a single grain of salt, who walks his own path every morning up to one round drop of water at the top, his own small lake.

Then the sun gets hotter and the lake starts to go. Dewey waits, and it comes back. It goes again, and he waits again. And on the day it does not come back at all, he finds out what his own body already knows how to do: fold himself small, let the water leave, and wait, for as long as waiting takes, until one drop finds him and the wall wakes up with him.

Soft voice, slow pace, warm light. Made for the wind-down before sleep.

Made for families to listen to together.

1% of every purchase goes to the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, to protect the small animals that live in moss, leaf litter and soil.

  • Capybara | Bo and The River That Came Back

A gentle bedtime story from the Fenekie Explorer Club.

Tonight you go to the Pantanal, a huge flooded grassland in Brazil where the rivers spread out flat across the land and the water lies so still it holds the palm trees upside down. There you meet Bo, a capybara, the largest rodent on Earth, lying at the edge of the river with his eyes and his ears and his nose just above the surface and the whole rest of him gone quiet underneath. Birds come and stand on his back, and he lets them. He even rolls over to help. And when the river shrinks in the dry season and everyone crowds in around the last of the water, Bo waits, the way he always waits, for the rain to come back and give the river to everybody again.

Soft voice, slow pace, warm light. Made for the wind-down before sleep.

Made for families to listen to together.

1% of every purchase from the Fenekie Explorer Club goes directly to the wild animals in our stories. This week it supports Onçafari, who work on the ground in the Brazilian Pantanal, the wetland this whole story rests on.

  • Whale Shark | Cosmo and The Stars He Could Not See

A gentle bedtime story from the Fenekie Explorer Club.

Tonight you go far out into the warm open ocean, past the last of the shallow water, to the place where there is no shore and no bottom you can see. Blue in every direction. There you meet Cosmo, a whale shark, the largest fish in the whole sea, drifting slowly with his mouth open and letting the water bring him his supper. On his back he carries a pattern of pale spots that belongs to no other animal alive, and behind his left fin four of them sit together like a small quiet constellation. Everyone who swims past can see it. Divers can see it. You can see it. Cosmo cannot, and he never will. He carries his whole sky around with him and has never once looked at it.

Soft voice, slow pace, warm light. Made for the wind-down before sleep.

  • Superb Lyrebird | Digby and The Forest Under His Feet

A gentle bedtime story from the Fenekie Explorer Club.

Tonight you go down into the wet green forests of southeastern Australia, where the tree ferns arch overhead and the fallen leaves lie deep and soft. There you meet Digby, a young lyrebird with a silvery tail and two heavy digging feet. He is hungry, so he scratches. He scratches all day long, sweeping the leaves back with his feet, looking for beetles. And he is a little sad, because his song is not finished yet, and the older birds down in the gully have songs that are. What Digby does not know is that everywhere his feet have been, the forest is quietly starting again. More beetles come. Small green shoots find the bare ground and wake up. He is making the very thing he is looking for, and he never once turns around to see it.

Soft voice, slow pace, warm light. Made for the wind-down before sleep.

  • Honduran White Bat | Poppy and The House That Turned Green

A gentle bedtime story from the Fenekie Explorer Club.

Tonight you go up into the warm green dark of a Central American rainforest, where the big leaves hang low and the rain taps softly overhead. There you meet Poppy, a bat as small as your thumb and as white as snow, with a bright yellow nose and two bright yellow ears. She has no house yet. So she climbs out along one enormous leaf and begins to bite, carefully, one side vein at a time, until the whole green roof folds down around her like a tent. And when the morning sun comes through it, something quiet and lovely happens to her.

Soft voice, slow pace, warm light. Made for the wind-down before sleep.

  • Vaquita | Eco and The Sea That Answered

A gentle bedtime story from the Fenekie Explorer Club.

Tonight you slip beneath the warm green water of the Gulf of California, where the sunlight fades a few body-lengths down and the sea keeps its secrets. There you meet Eco, a small grey vaquita with two dark rings around her eyes. She cannot see far in her murky sea, so she calls into the dark, and the sea calls back. Fish. Rock. Current. Family. Tonight, somewhere out in the green, a small new voice is calling for the very first time, and Eco is listening.

  • Maned Wolf | Pip and The Orchard She Walked

A gentle bedtime story from the Fenekie Explorer Club.

Tonight you are deep in the golden grasslands of the Brazilian Cerrado, where the grass grows taller than a grown-up and rolls all the way out to a wide, quiet horizon. Somewhere in all that gold, on legs as long as stilts, walks an animal unlike any other, not quite a fox, not quite a wolf, the only one of her kind anywhere on Earth. Her name is Pip, and tonight she is walking the long way home, the way she always does, carrying something small and secret inside her that will grow into a tree long after she has moved on.

  • Okapi | Strike and The Secret of the Deep Forest

A gentle bedtime story from the Fenekie Explorer Club.

Tonight you are deep in the Ituri rainforest of the Congo, where the trees grow so tall and so close together that the sunlight arrives in thin gold shafts, and the whole world is green and hushed and soft. Somewhere in all that green, an animal is standing so still that you could walk right past her and never know. Her name is Strike, and she is an okapi, the giraffe's only cousin, so well hidden that people once believed she was only a story. Tonight she walks the shadows with her calf behind her, and her striped legs gather up what little light there is, so that he always knows the way home.
