Fenekie Bedtime Stories

A gentle bedtime story from the Fenekie Explorer Club.

Tonight you are in New Zealand, at the bottom of the world, where tall rimu trees hold the stars between their branches and the sea moves all around a quiet island. Under the roots of one of those old trees, a round green creature is waking up. His name is Echo, and he is a kakapo, the parrot of the night. He cannot fly, but tonight he will climb to the top of the tallest tree on the island, fill his chest with air, and send his voice out across the dark valley. The question is whether anything will answer.

High in the misty bamboo forests of the Eastern Himalayas, where the mountain wind is cold and the stalks grow taller than a house, a small fire-colored animal wakes before dawn. His name is Rusty. He fits in two hands, his fur is the color of autumn leaves, his ringed tail is as long as his whole body, and on the side of each wrist he carries a secret - a sixth finger that will help him reach the highest branch when the mountain wind is strongest.

On the island of Bohol, when the sun sets over the rainforest, the smallest watchman wakes. His name is Blinco. He fits in one hand, his eyes are bigger than his own brain, and they cannot move, not even a little. So he turns his whole head, almost all the way around, to see the whole dark forest at once. Tonight, somewhere out past the open stream bank, something small and lost is calling in a voice only he can hear.
