I've heard a lot of versions of this - but I really like the relaxed feel that the Canote Brothers give to the way they play it. It is my favorite version.

I have heard it said that the tune comes from Alabama fiddler James Bryan. And at least one story is told (by Dean Barber) - that James learned it from Tommy Jackson - who learned it from Coleman Barwick from Alabama. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78xAS5FKdmg)

GDgd / learned to play this from a recording by the Canote Brothers. There is a lot of lyrics that can be found, so I picked the verses I liked and used the chorus from a YouTube video of an interview that Bob Holt did with Charlie Acuff. Charlie plays and sings the tune.

Charlie says he learned it from his grandfather and figures it went back to a time during or right after the civil war.
