And we are back for the second half of our podcast on fighting the flu. If you haven’t listened to part 1 of fighting the flu and Staying Healthy, we talked about sanitation, hygiene, your diet, and a few other topics.

This flu season has been a tough one. The flu this year has caused the most hospitalizations of people in the past 10 years, and the annual flu shot is not effective against the virus.

So it is even more important for you to keep yourself healthy, and do what you can to prevent the flu bug from effecting you and your family.

In a SHTF scenario, the stakes will be greater, and there will be less help around. The last thing we want in a situation like that is problems on top of the problems we already have. 

SPP240 Fighting The Flu and Staying Healthy (Part 2)

This week Dale and I finish our conversation on staying healthy and staying healthy for today, as well as in a disaster scenario. Some of the things we take for granted today, and some of the things we just don’t pay attention to could lead to much larger problems if we’re not paying attention.

Disinfect Everything

Dale always knows when it’s flu season. Because I get crazy with my Thieves essential oils. I love Thieves. It is a blend of 4 different essential oils that during the 15th century when the bubonic plague was rampant through Asia and Europe a group of 4 men were robbing the dead, but yet never became infected with the plague.

The story goes on to say that after the 4 men were caught, they were asked of how they were able to not get sick and they revealed that they had used a blend of natural essential oils that they had concocted were able to kill airborne bacteria and they had placed the blend on masks, or something like that. And the name of the blend of essential oils has now become known as Thieves.

It’s hard to tell if this story has been embellished as it has been past down through the centuries, but one thing is certain, Thieves oil does work. In fact it has been proven to kill 99.7% of airborne bacteria. The oil has antibacterial, antiviral, antiseptic, and anti-infective properties that help to protect against the flu.

I like to make a spray on disinfecting solution that I wipe down everything in our home.

Thieves Disinfecting Cleaner

* ½ cup rubbing alcohol

* ½ cup white vinegar

* 2 cups hot water

* 50 drops Thieves essential oils

* 1 teaspoon Dr. Bronners castile soap

Put everything into a spray bottle and spray away! I tend to focus on hand rails, light switches, bathroom surfaces, and pretty much everywhere else.

You can also diffuse the essential oil through the air in your home. I love the way it smells. It smells clean! And when I can walk into my home, and smell the Thieves working, it makes me feel better knowing I am doing what I can to help protect us from getting the flu, even if it is just in a small way.

Add A Humidifier

Apparently the flu virus doesn’t like moist air. Perhaps this is why the flu is more prevalent in the cold dry winter months. So do what you can to keep the air in your home moist. Add a humidifier, or boil a large pot of water on your stovetop, or wood burning stove.

You can add some orange slices, cinnamon and cloves to make your house smell great while you are adding much needed moisture to the air.
