  • 201: Gremlins + Gremlins 2: The New Batch

Happy New Year's Eve film buds,

This episode is our last of 2021 and the final installment of our Holiday Movie Season. Joining us again is our creator, Henry, who was gracious enough to give us another hour of his shore-leave for the episode.

This week, we're reviewing and discussing the classic Christmas-Creature-Feature, Gremlins and it's camp, B-movie sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch. They're modern marvels of puppetry and make for a fun final discussion of the year. On top of that, we discuss Christmas movies watched every year, No Way Home, and give listeners a final message for the New Year.

We hope y'all have enjoyed not just the month, but all of the content we've brought you in 2021. We'll catch y'all in 2022.

    Thanks y'all,

    The Buds

  • 200: The Green Knight

Hello and Merry Christmas film buds,

This week we have a very special episode for y'all. Not only are we celebrating our 200th episode, but we are joined by the original host and creator of The Film Buds Podcast, Henry. While he's been away, he hasn't seen much, but when he said he saw David Lowery's The Green Knight, we knew we'd found our Christmas movie for the week.

In the episode we discuss and review The Green Knight, as well as discuss the history of King Arthur and Sir Gawain's myths, What We're Watching, and more.

There are many things to be grateful for this time of year, but we're grateful for the gift of your continued support and listenership. Merry Christmas to all those celebrating, and to those who aren't we wish you safety, comfort, and joy.

    Thanks y'all,

    The Buds

  • 199: L.A. Confidential, 8 Women + In Bruges

    Happy Holidays film buds,

this week we continue our analysis and review of varying Holiday/Christmas movies from different decades and regions. This episode, we begin with a discussion on Christmas movies and where they started, before beginning our main discussion: Criminal Christmas.

Much like all of the films that remind people to be Nice, sometimes, it can be fun to walk on the Naughty side. Instead of talking about Die Hard or Iron Man 3, we talk about the crime classics LA Confidential, 8 Women, and In Bruges.

Finding different Christmas and Holiday films to review has been a real pleasure, and we hope our listeners are getting as much out of it as we are. Be sure to check out last week's International Christmas episode or our Happiest Season Review, and definitely be here next week when we hit episode 200.

    Thanks y'all,

  • 198: Tokyo Godfathers + Rare Exports

    Hey film buds,

Christmas, Hanukkah, and more are traditions that are celebrated around the world. So naturally, it makes sense that other global cinematic traditions would put their own stamp on the Holiday Season.

Our first Christmas movie from across the seas is Tokyo Godfathers, Satoshi Kon's 2003 anime from Japan. Joining in the discussion is an old friend of the show's, Austin Craver, who leant his expert anime insights to the show. Second, on the suggestion of a friend, Mark, we watch Rare Exports, a Finnish film directed by Jalmari Helander.

We hope you all are enjoying the Holiday Season and our dive into what makes a Holiday Movie. Be sure to check out last week's Hanukkah episode, and also check out Austin's show Third Impact Anime Podcast (@ti_anime on Twitter).

    Happy Holidays y'all,

    Happy Holidays Film Buds,

With December comes the beginning of our Holiday Movie season, and we begin with Hanukkah.

Hanukkah is a beautiful holiday found in Judaism, a religious tradition and holiday under represented in film. To expand on people's understanding we decided to tackle Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights and A Rugrats Chanukah.

We also talk about our Vintage shopping, What We're Watching, and Clark Collis's new book, available for sale.

Thanks for listening y'all and Happy Hanukkah,

  • 194: The Land

Hello Film Buds of the World,

This week, we’re continuing to expand our cinematic palette with the 1969 Egyptian film The Land. Based on a novel of the same name, and directed by internationally recognized Youssef Chahine, The Land continues as our last film did focusing on the story of a country still relatively freshly out of British Imperial rule, utilizing rural and agricultural environments and characters, religion, and more to create a thematically rich, sometimes dense, film.

Beyond The Land we also talk about What We’re Watching, Disney news, Jurassic World Evolution 2, and more.

We hope you all enjoy this peak into the universality of the human experience through the lens of international cinema as much as we are.

Be sure to check out last week’s episode, and thanks of listening

  • 193: Mother India

    Hello world,

With a new month comes a new theme. November is International Cinema Month as a way to celebrate the cinematic tradition of our listenership’s native lands. Our first episode highlights Indian film from the Bollywood tradition.

Mother India (1957) is a gripping historic epic about the formation of modern India in the shadow of Imperialism’s end, while also calling on rich Hindi religious tradition and themes. The film came out six years after India held its first election and creates an excellent window into a rich social and cinematic history.

We hope that you enjoy this episode and our International Cinema month at large. Be sure to check out last week’s two part episode (1 & 2) and go and listen to our guest appearance on The Weekly Pop-Up.

    Thanks as always for listening,

    Paul

    Happy Halloween Film Buds,

Welcome to our Slasher Extravaganza! This month has been all about thrills, chills, and things that go bump in the night. For our send off to our favorite time of year and holiday, we put together a special 40 movie deep-dive into the slasher genre. And for your listening pleasure we broke it up into two parts.

Joining us for the discussion of Scream and its sequels is Sky Tilley, who has been joining us regularly this month. Across the franchises, we dive into the meta themes and intertextuality of the Scream, and the racial narratives of Candyman that work to varying degrees. We also share our personal rankings for the franchises overall and the individual films for each Slasher.
