  • 192: Slasher Extravaganza Part I

    Happy Halloween Film Buds,

Welcome to our Slasher Extravaganza! This month has been all about thrills, chills, and things that go bump in the night. For our send off to our favorite time of year and holiday, we put together a special 40 movie deep-dive into the slasher genre. And for your listening pleasure we broke it up into two parts.

Part I of our Slasher Extravaganza features the Holy Trinity of Slasher Icons; Michael Myers with Halloween, Jason Voorhees with Friday the 13th, and Fred Krueger with A Nightmare On Elm Street. Joining us in our talk on the Halloween Franchise are friends of the show Nicolás Delgadillo and Madelaine Davis, where we talk about all 12 films. We also share our personal rankings for the franchises overall and the individual films for each Slasher.

  • 191: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari + Nosferatu

    Hey there film buds,

Though people often associate silent film with the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo, it encompassed as wide a range of genres and styles as film today. That includes the Horror genre.

Horror, like much of the Silent Era, often relied on established ideas from literature and the stage. Since we recently dove deeper into film history with episodes covering horror and drama in the 30s and 40s and teenagers in movies of the 50s, we decided to present you with Silent Horror Film. Specifically chose films as a part of the German Expressionist movement, including FW Murnau’s Nosferatu from 1922 and Robert Wiene’s The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari from 1920. The style became synonymous with the Horror genre and was later used in other films, like the Universal Studios monster films and more. You can read more about the Expressionist movement here.

Joining us in our discussion this week is friend of the show Sky Tilley and first time guest Madelaine Davis. Madelaine is a published writer, editor, marketing expert, and semi-professional athlete. They’re both horror fans. We hope you enjoy this week’s show, and as always:

    Keep it spooky y’all

  • 190: Cronos + Tigers Are Not Afraid

    Hey film buds,

Last month we did a great episode with Nicolás Delgadillo to celebrate the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. We decided we’d mark the end of Hispanic Heritage Month with a second part focused on Horror films with Hispanic roots.

Join us as we talk about Guillermo del Toro’s feature-length directorial debut Cronos from 1993 and Issa López’s breakout feature film Tigers Are Not Afraid (Vuelven) from 2017. Though neither film can be described as a typical horror experience (indeed both are light on jump-scares and men in masks), they are excellent examples of filmmakers using the genre to address fear itself.

We will also continue our updated coverage of the pending IATSE labor strike, what we’re watching, and much more. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out last week’s episode as well as all our excellent horror offerings.

    Keep it spooky y’all

PS We had some audio issues on this one. We are remedying the situation and I, Paul, apologize personally.

  • 189: Dawn of the Dead

    Hey film buds,

this week we continue on our horror path with a follow-up to two earlier episodes, dedicated to the zombie classic and remake Dawn of the Dead, and we’re joined by friend of the show Sky Tilley. The 1978 classic is a loose sequel to George R. Romero’s original, Night of the Living Dead, while the Zack Snyder 2004 remake became the basis upon which Snyder would return to the genre with Army of the Dead.

On top of reviewing both films, Sky and Paul talk the IATSE strike authorization vote, Sky reacts to last week’s episode, and more. We hope y’all enjoy.

  • 188: Grindhouse

    Hey film buds,

Welcome to a very special Film Buds’ October! All month long, we’re going to be bringing y’all the horror film content you could want, and it begins here with Episode 188.

Lauren had not selected the movies for an episode, so I turned the decision making process over to her, and she chose Grindhouse (2007), a fun Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino mash-up movie, featuring two films in one: Planet Terror and Death Proof.

The films and their presentations are an homage to the cheaply made, high shock-value films of the 70s. Though neither of these films are made on the shoe-string of a true grindhouse film, they meticulously recreate the experience with everything from “Missing Reels” to the so-called china dolls in the end credits. They even invited guest directors Rob Zombie, Edgr Wright, and Eli Roth to direct several trailers within the film presentation.

We hope that you enjoy the episode and join us throughout the month as we bring you more horror and Halloween content.

    Keep it spooky,

    Paul

  • 187: Turning Point + The Looming Tower

    Hey film buds,

Twenty years ago the greatest terrorist attack happened when four planes were hijacked and flown into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and a field in Shanksville, PA. After all this time, there’s still a lot of story to tell of the people and events of the years before and after that fateful September day. We decided using a documentary and a dramatized version of the years before could open a quick door into how society currently feels about those events, and how traumatic experiences are translated into narrative.

We hope you enjoy it, and if this episode is too uncomfortable, we apologize. Next week we’ll be back to our more light-hearted fair.

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • 186: Frida + Under the Same Moon

    Hey Film Buds,

here at The Film Buds Podcast there is a core belief that film, movies, cinema, las peliculas can change the world for the better, and a key part of that is making sure that fair representation exists on the screen and that people are exposed to it.

For that reason, this week’s episode is dedicated to Hispanic Heritage Month and highlighting Hispanic stories on film. For those unaware, Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15, the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, and runs until October 15. Frida (2002) and Under the Same Moon (La Misma Luna) (2007), are both focus on Mexican narratives, but they are meant to be an entry point for listeners and provide different types of Hispanic narratives and experiences.

Joining us in the discussion is friend of the show, and Rotten Tomatoes Certified critic, Nicolás José Delgadillo. In addition to the larger discussion we also talk about the West Side Story and Nightmare Alley trailers, what we’ve been watching, and more.

Thanks as always and I hope y’all enjoy,

    Paul

  • 185: Rebel Without a Cause + Blackboard Jungle

    Hey Film Buds,

As people return to school I thought it could be a good time to recall what it was to be a teenager, and what better way than by getting in touch with the teenage roots. We use Rebel Without a Cause and Blackboard Jungle (both from 1955) to analyze how American youth grew up on screen. We also talk about the new Matrix trailer, 9-11 and its films, and What We’re Watching.

    Thanks buds,
