  • Ep. 083 - Moneyball (Lewis, 2003/ Miller, 2011)

    **THIS EPISODE CONTAINS FULL SPOILERS**

It's hard not to be romantic about baseball...or about podcasting! Returning to the pod is the very first guest we ever had on (all the way back in 2020!), Laura's brother Roben! We discuss the 2011 blockbuster, "Moneyball," starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, directed by Bennett Miller. Based on Michael Lewis's non-fiction book of the same name, the film was everything we wanted in a sports drama and more - it contained high stakes, an underdog story, and Pitt doing his usual thing of eating food during all his scenes! What a weird but fun quirk for an actor to have! So join us as we take a deep dive into the Oakland A's incredible 2002 season - this episode is a real HOME RUN (*pukes from the pun*)

    **THIS EPISODE CONTAINS FULL SPOILERS**

Pull out that old bottle of Pinot Noir that you’ve been saving for a special moment, and enjoy it while listening to your Film is Lit hosts discuss "Sideways" (Pickett, 2004/ Payne, 2004)! What a delightful surprise that a twenty-year-old dramedy would become one of our favorite pieces to date. The story and characters are complex like a fine wine, and seem to get better as we gain more experience as adults. Lose yourself in the grape, man!

    **THIS EPISODE CONTAINS FULL SPOILERS**

We finally met the deadline for a holiday episode!! If you’re a millennial, you’re probably very familiar with our source material this week - Ron Howard’s 2000 adaptation of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” adapted from Dr. Seuss's classic children's novel of the same name. Does it hold a message for children, or is it more of a reminder for adults that there’s more to the holidays than commercialism? Hmmmm…

  • Ep. 079 - Persuasion (Austen, 1817/ Cracknell, 2022)

    **THIS EPISODE CONTAINS FULL SPOILERS**

It’s no secret that 2022’s “Persuasion” (dir. Carrie Cracknell) was not kindly received…and we won’t argue with the critics! Welcome to an absolute hate-fest of this zero-in-Bath, middle-finger-to-Jane-Austen drudge of a movie, seemingly written by a 13-year-old TikTok user. A very special guest host, Laura’s best friend Alison Wood, joins us to discuss just how antithetical this movie is to the spirit of Austen’s Regency story of lost love.

  • Ep. 078 - The Gray Man (Greaney, 2009/ Russo Brothers, 2022)

**THIS EPISODE CONTAINS FULL SPOILERS FOR THE BOOK, MOVIE, AND FOR "NO TIME TO DIE"**

Welcome to Season 8 of the Film is Lit podcast! On this premiere episode, your trusty Film is Lit hosts cover Danny's favorite genre - spy/assassin thriller where the spy/assassin is framed by their own organization and goes on the run while the entire planet tries (and fails) to hunt them down. More specifically, we cover Mark Greaney's globetrotting shoot 'em up, "The Gray Man," adapted into the pulse-pounding Ryan Gosling movie of the same name, directed by the Russo brothers. The only thing better than spy-on-the-run thrillers is when Chris Evans plays the bad guy, and thankfully this film has BOTH! It's safe to say that we had a BLAST recording this episode.

  • Ep. 077 - Little Fires Everywhere (Ng, 2017/ Tigelaar, 2020)

    **THIS EPISODE CONTAINS FULL SPOILERS**

Well...that show only took 2 months to finish! Welcome to the series 7 finale of "Film is Lit!" In this episode, we cover Celeste Ng's best-selling novel, "Little Fires Everywhere," which spawned the - some would say "endless" - 2020 Reese Witherspoon-produced mini-series of the same name. The story focuses on two families living in Shaker Heights, Ohio, in the 1990s, whose lives become intertwined. Through prejudice and misunderstanding, the matriarchs begin to clash, ultimately leading to scorching consequences. This is the SECOND Hulu adaptation of a book that we've covered on this podcast, and both shows have been absolutely atrocious. We're beginning to believe that Hulu should stick to producing "Only Murders in the Building"... QUIT WHILE YOU'RE AHEAD, HULU!

  • Ep. 076 - Persepolis (Satrapi, 2000/ Satrapi & Paronnaud 2007)

    **THIS EPISODE CONTAINS FULL SPOILERS**

Do you know what a bandes dessinées is...? Well, neither did we, until now that is! Listen as we discuss Marjane Satrapi's autobiographical graphic novel, "Persepolis," which depicts her childhood up to her early adult years in Iran and Austria during and after the Islamic Revolution. We compare and contrast the book to its groundbreaking film adaptation of the same name, directed by Satrapi in conjunction with French artist Vincent Paronnaud. Aside from being a valuable history lesson on a topic that's rarely discussed in America, the movie is also a breathtaking piece of art, so please give this episode a listen!
