  • 037 Seminar: Sensual and Symbolic Chocolat (with Addyson Teal)

Addyson Teal, Cinema and Comedy Coordinator at Artsquest, has come 'round to get the squeak out of your door, estudiantes...

It's special guest seminar time again! Ready to get sinfully delicious in this (not very romantic) romantic drama all about cacao beans? Addyson of the band Fig for a Kiss and Escape! The Podcast fame is here with your favorite professors to break down the wardrobe symbolism and sensual filmmaking of 2000's Chocolat (dir: Lasse Hallström). What do you see in the spinning chocolate mahoozit? I hope it's a film school education.

Please rate, review, and subscribe on your podcatcher of choice, you unrefined cacao nips.

  • 036 The Eddie Murphy Movie Extravaganza: Shrek & Daddy Day Care

SomeBODY once told me that this is the best film school podcast taught by film school professionals (not graduates) around!

The 2000's live! Professors Malu and Katie relive their wayward youths by indulging in 1999's Shrek (dir: Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson) and 2003's Daddy Day Care (dir: Geoff Rodkey)! Your inscrutable instructors talk at length about how funny these movies are and then ultimately decide that they hold up, sort of, kind of, mostly, and it's not just rose-colored glasses, probably.

They break ice and Malu tortures Katie with a game about grisly fairy tales. Who could ask for anything more?

Please rate, review, and subscribe on your podcatcher of choice, ya farquads.

  • 035 The Eddie Murphy Movie Extravaganza: Coming to America & Coming 2 America

SEXUAL! CHOCOLATE! Give it up for your professors/queens who will show you just what's in that McDowell's operations manual!

The Eddie Murphy Movie Extravaganza is nearing its end! Professors Katie and Malu hit you with both sides of the bookends by discussing 1988's Coming to America (dir: John Landis) and 2021's Coming 2 America (dir: Craig Brewer)! Your tenacious teachers dive deep into set design, structuring a story, and how to depict women in film! And how the sequel does only 1 out of 3 of those things!

Ice is broken and Malu quizzes Katie on fictional African geography. How well does it go? You'll just have to find out by listening, ya goobs!

Aaand cut! Print! Film School Professionals here to learn you some filmings!

The Eddie Murphy Movie Extravaganza continues! Professors Malu and Katie go back into Eddie Murphy's filmography to witness his iconic turn as Axel Foley in 1984's Beverly Hills Cop (dir: Martin Brest) and to dive into his celebrated collaboration with Steve Martin in 1999's Bowfinger (dir: Frank Oz). It... doesn't go well.

  • 033 The Eddie Murphy Movie Extravaganza: Dolemite Is My Name

Film School Professionals is our name and educating you on filmographies is our game!

In celebration of the release of Coming 2 America, your favorite film school slapdash professors are going to party all the time! They're diving into a selection of the one, the only, the raw and delirious Mr. Eddie Murphy himself, and they're beginning with 2019's Dolemite Is My Name (dir: Craig Brewer). Professors Katie and Malu discuss Rudy Ray Moore, representation, fucking up motherfuckers, and the uplifting power of filmmaking. Katie also pulls out a game but manages to kind of beef it. Oh, Professor Katie.

  • 032 Professor Malu's Birthday Spectacular: Tarzan, Anastasia, and Atlantis: The Lost Empire

What day is today? It's Malu's birthday! What a day for a birthday! Let's all have some cake/podcast!

It's a party in class today, estudiantes! Your (debatably) favorite professor, Malu Mirones, turns the ripe old age of 21 and she's going to EDUCATE YOU ON ANIMATION, FOOLS. Professor Katie surfs the deluge of Malu's love for Disney (Fox) animation and she even brings a tailor-made game for Malu, just to watch her squirm. Your illuminating instructors drink wine and bourbon and discuss 1997's Anastasia (dir: Don Bluth and Gary Goldman), 1999's Tarzan (dir: Kevin Lima and Chris Buck), and finally, surprising no one, 2001's Atlantis: The Lost Empire (dir: Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise). Plus, ice is broken by being dumped into booze because these teachers are thirstyyyyy.

  • 031 Seminar: Long Cons & Chosen Family in Paper Moon and Solo: A Star Wars Story (with Gabe Mara)

Everything you've heard about Film School Professionals is true. Clover is actually the voice of the Millenium Falcon.

Professors Malu and Katie welcome an exceptionally boring and very obnoxious guest who won't stop farting: their producer Gabe Mara of the Slow Readers podcast! Gabe swags in like he owns the place, demanding your two intrepid instructors break down two film about con artists, fast talkers, ill-gained dollars, and the family we choose versus the family we have. That's right, Katie and Malu discuss the most obvious double feature in history: Peter Bogdanovich's Paper Moon (1973) [but we really know it's Polly Platt's film] and Ron Howard's Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) [though it was also sort of Lord and Miller's].

Katie shatters the ice with some heavy heavy Emilia Clarke talk and Gabe brings the heat with some Gatekeeper action.

  • 030 Quarantine Releases: Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Now, you heard the rest. Ah estudiantes, we're gonna show you the best. The Film School Professionals are gonna show you a devastating and brilliant film from quarantine days!

Professors Katie and Malu talk a whole lot of delirious goofery before they break down George C. Wolfe's adaptation of August Wilson's stageplay Ma Rainey's Black Bottom! Your testy teachers discuss the outstanding sound editing, the rich writing, and of course, the incredible performances of Viola Davis and the late, great Chadwick Boseman. Plus Mayor Clarence Royce is there! For a little while anyway.

They break some ice talking about hot and cold days in the 20's and really dig deep into some blues trivia. A one. A two, A you-know-what-to-do.

  • 029 Quarantine Releases: Wonder Woman 1984

Take your seats, grab your dumb rocks, and put on your gold armor, estudiantes! It's Quarantine Releases and Chris Pine is back for some convoluted reason!

Professors Malu and Katie go for Warner Brothers' Christmas gift to us all: 2020's home blockbuster, Wonder Woman 1984! Like the vicious academic cheetahs they are, your profs savagely carve into Patty Jenkins' superhero sophomore slump. They also debate the correct way to say "Gadot" because nothing is easy in this world.

No Icebreaker this week, cause ain't nobody got time for that, but there is a pitch perfect game.

  • 028 Quarantine Releases: Sound of Metal

You hear that, estudiantes? It's the sound of stillness. And drumming. And metal.

Welcome back to Quarantine Releases, class, and boy, have your favorite professors pulled out all the stops for you. Professors Katie and Malu lock themselves in little rooms and tell you everything they have to say about Darius Marder's Sound of Metal until they have nothing more to say! Your ineffable instructors break down the 2020 film's sound design, divulge every little spoiler (hope you did your homework and watched the movie), and dig deep on Riz Ahmed and Paul Raci, even if they never remember's the latter's name.

Plus, Icebreakers and Alan Smithees. That's life. No, for real. Okay? It just passes. It just f***ing... f***ing passes. Like you, if you study and work hard.
