Markets appeared relieved the US monthly jobs report wasn’t as weak as feared, the S&P500 rising 1.4%. Markets slightly pared the chances of a Fed rate cut at month end but otherwise rates were little changed, as were currencies.

There was more disappointing news on the US economy, which pushed bond yields and the US dollar lower. Equities rose as the likelihood of a Fed rate cut was seen as higher.

Global equity markets fared poorly, with losses in Asia followed by a 3.3% fall in the Eurostoxx 50 and a 2.1% fall in the S&P500. US bond yields are also lower. At play are concerns about the US economy. Disappointing private payrolls and auto sales data came on the heels of the yesterday’s weak manufacturing data.

Sentiment was hurt by reports the US was considering limiting investors’ access to Chinese markets and delisting Chinese companies from US stock exchanges. The S&P500 closed down 0.5%, US bond yields also lower.

Markets were most contained overnight, with little major news flow of note. The S&P500 is unchanged, US interest rates are slightly lower, and the US dollar is slightly higher.
