  • Rugby, Coaching and Leadership with Phil Davies

Welcome back to the Building Business Resilience show.

It's episode 11 and in today's show we are going to be talking to Phil Davies

Phil is a big personality in the sport of Rugby which has been a way of life for him for over 40 years now.

When you speak to Phil you can see and hear the passion in his voice for the game he loves.

Having spent all his playing career with his beloved Llanelli, he won the Welsh Cup five times, skippering the club for a number of seasons.

He earned 46 caps for Wales in the back five of the scrum, sharing in the Five Nations title triumph of 1994.

As a coach, one of his most notable achievement was with Leeds between 1996 and 2006, where he took them from division 4 through to the English premiership and he’s also had spells with the Scarlets, Cardiff Blues, Worcester, RGC, Wales U20s and Namibia where he saw two world cups

Although still involved in coaching he also runs a consultancy company specialising in leadership and coaching. He says our core purpose is to develop ethical and transformational leadership in individual players to ensure teams are prepared and inspired to serve and lead beyond the playing field. They focus primarily on growth and authenticity, character and responsibility, innovation and vision, and finally empowerment and engagement.

  • Business & The Apprentice with Alex Mills

Its episode 10 of the Building Business Resilience show.

In today's episode we’re going to be talking to Alex Mills

Alex is a home grown entrepreneur and star of the BBC apprentice.

He was a contestant on The Apprentice back in 2013 and did Wales proud! He was the first Welsh candidate in 10 years as well as incredibly being only 22 when he applied to the show, plus he was also the youngest contestant of 2013!  Keen to leave school straight after completing his GCSEs and began working for a slate business in 2009/10, when the business went under,  Alex took a redundancy package and decided to invest that money into setting up his own slate business venture based near Bridgend. He used his digital skills to grow the company and it expanded due to it’s digital expansion generating large orders each year  The business even attracted clients such as the Royal Family!

In 2012, the 21year old,  Alex was ready to invest again and sold his shares to his business partner and began to look into a new, exciting insurance project.  Selling his shares gave Alex access to the capital for his new project and feeling inspired by reading one of James Caan’s books, The Real Deal, Alex decided to apply for Dragon’s Den and The Apprentice. Whilst The Dragon’s Den rejected Alex’s application, he went on to reach the semi-finals of The Apprentice where he received one of the most complimentary firings ever!

Many TV offers followed The Apprentice, and Alex appeared on programs such as Celeb Juice and Virtually Famous however, Alex had no interest in being famous for his eyebrows and being Welsh.

Whilst on The Apprentice, Alex began an insurance company so it was easy now for him to turn his attention back to this. Insurance is an incredibly competitive industry but it’s something that everyone needs throughout the year and Alex felt he could come at it from a new angle with a new customer perspective as well as revolutionising the industry using technology and IT to create a smoother customer experience. Dynamo was re-launched providing a service, with no stuffiness, good quality products and very competitive price. Its new perspective is what makes it so successful and in just two years Dynamo went from start up to a seven figure revenue generation!

  • Olympian mindset with Jamie Baulch

In this episode we’re going to be talking to Jamie Baulch Entrepreneur and Olympian.

Jamie’s talent for running was spotted by his Headmaster, Eric Atkins, on sports day at Henllys Junior School in Newport. After beating everyone so convincingly on that memorable sports day, Mr Atkins encouraged Jamie to join Newport Harriers, in South Wales.

After the introduction to athletics, when Jamie was only 10 years old he never looked back.  Jamie developed into one of the big personalities of the British athletics team, recognised by his peroxide dreadlocks for many years, which led to a promotional campaign with Vidal Sassoon.

Jamie made his debut for the GB & NI team at a Junior International in Salamanca, Spain, in 1991. He burst onto the international scene, winning the 200m and breaking the Welsh record in that race.  In his first year competing over 400m, Jamie was selected for the 1996 Olympic Games and won Silver as part of the 4x400m quartet.

Jamie became World Indoor Champion in 1999 and still holds the British Indoor record over 400m set in 1997. Jamie won 13 medals at Olympic Games, World and European Championships and Commonwealth Games.

Jamie helped campaign for his team’s World Championship Gold medals from 1997 to be presented to the 4x400m quartet including Iwan Thomas, Roger Black and Mark Richardson after a 13 year wait. This followed the disqualification of the USA team after Antonio Pettigrew admitted doping in 2007.

Jamie continues to be a popular and respected voice in the world of athletics.

Jamie is also an ambassador for Barnardos and Cancer Research Wales as part of his commitment to supporting charities.

  • Managing Your Mental Health During Coronavirus with Gwen Goddard

It's Mental Health Awareness Week, so Gwen Goddard of Mental Health First Aid Wales joins Shane and Gareth to give her five tips on managing your mental health during the coronavirus lockdown.

Mental Health First Aid Wales is a subsidiary of Mind, a registered charity situated in Wales. The aim of both organisations is to provide services that support the wellbeing of individuals and communities across Wales.

The organisation says training is essential to equip people with tools, understanding and confidence to deal with all kinds of mental ill-health and well-being issues. Given the current climate in the UK surrounding mental health, the likelihood of encountering issues both personally, and professionally is almost guaranteed.

Mental Health First Aid is for everyone. Mental Health problems are extremely common with one in four people experiencing some kind of mental health issue throughout their lives. The organisation has a new campaign - #SupportingWalesTogether - that they have set up and have released a charity single to go along with it:
