We have to know our core beliefs and values because these will help us choose the people we want to be in relationship with, the companies we want to work for, the volunteer work we want to do, and so on. If we can't clearly articulate our core beliefs and values, we can be tossed by every strong wind and wave, and possibly find ourselves with people who are not our "tribe."
Conversely, when we're clear on our most important beliefs and values, we recognize the right people when we meet them. We're drawn to them, and them to us. We're drawn to the right jobs and groups, and before long, we're in the middle of the path of our purpose.
To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, these are some examples of core beliefs (negative ones included to help you pull out the weeds):
I am bad. (I can't do anything right.)
I am smart. (I will succeed if I try.)
I am unlovable. (Nobody will ever appreciate me.)
People are untrustworthy. (People will take advantage and hurt me if they have a chance.)
The world is dangerous/not safe. The following examples of core values are taken from the Cub Scouts:
1. Citizenship: Contributing service and showing responsibility to local, state, and national communities.
2. Compassion: Being kind and considerate, and showing concern for the well-being of others.
3. Cooperation: Being helpful and working together with others toward a common goal
4. Courage: Being brave and doing what is right regardless of our fears, the difficulties, or the consequences.
5. Faith: Having inner strength and confidence based on our trust in God.
6. Health and Fitness: Being personally committed to keeping our minds and bodies clean and fit.
7. Honesty: Telling the truth and being worthy of trust.
8. Perseverance: Sticking with something and not giving up, even if it is difficult.
9. Positive Attitude: Being cheerful and setting our minds to look for and find the best in all situations.
10. Resourcefulness: Using human and other resources to their fullest.
11. Respect: Showing regard for the worth of something or someone.
12. Responsibility: Fulfilling our duty to God, country, other people, and ourselves.
In this episode, we talk about how core beliefs and values can guide you in every storm of life and help you choose between competing options, some of which could distract you from your purpose.
