For our last episode of the year, we're delighted to get back to basics.  The Finding Home Podcast is going Full Real Estate, now and going forward.

This is a live presentation that Scott gave for at the Cornell Club on November 30th, 2022, where he lays out a few lessons from 20 years in real estate.

The most important?  That the home search is much more than a search for home.

Boy, am I excited to share with you all this week’s episode of Finding Home. (and that’s an understatement).

I was lucky to get to talk with Megan Mylan, who is an Oscar-winning documentary film director. You might be familiar with her current documentary, Simple as Water, or her excellent Lost Boys of Sudan - or Oscar-winner Smile Pinki.

Megan’s films aren’t a casual watch - they delicately unravel the more difficult parts of life: separation, displacement, family struggle, and the impacts of war.

In her most recent film, Simple as As Water, Megan paints an intimate portrait of the impact of war, separation, and displacement of Syrian families. It’s a tough but an urgent and timeless portrait. The film is much more than just a conversation about the devastation of war. It’s about the steadfast power of parental love.

“You keep using that word.  I do not think that means what you think it means.”

What exactly does “river view” mean? What does “central air conditioning” mean?  

How can you build trust when words aren’t always used properly in the real estate market?

Today, my fellow co-worker at the Harris Residential Team, Jonathan, “Yoni” Goldstein and I talk about, and discuss solutions to misused language in real estate marketing. Yoni and I get a bit, “nerdy” if you will - and we dive deeply into the intersection between language and finding “home”.

Growing up in Westchester County, Jonathan is no stranger to New York City - and his personal and career expertise shines in our conversation today. Jonathan joined The Harris Residential Team after a successful 10-year career working for L+M Development Partners. Jonathan played a key role in the pre-development, construction, preservation, and development of over 6,000 residential units across New York City. He has lived in many Manhattan neighborhoods over the past decade, and currently resides in Murray Hill.

As a parent, do you ever sometimes wish somebody could magically appear in your ear and tell you all the answers? 

I know I do. 

Today I sit down with the thoughtful, introspective, ever-so-positive, Dr. Michael Madden, who is also a fellow father, a facilitator of outdoor trips into the wilderness, and has witnessed the healing powers of psychedelics.  We talk through some of these deeper questions all us parents have.

You also might know Ben from his time as a creative director of the world famous Preservation Hall Jazz Band.  He’s also a film producer, entrepreneur, and even a member of the band where he plays tuba and bass. 

I’ve known Ben since childhood.  I grew up running around Preservation Hall with my best friend, Ben’s cousin. We talk all about New Orleans, and the role that he and Preservation Hall play in it.  We talk about the history and founding of Preservation Hall, what it’s like to be a touring musician, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and more.

Everyone talks about the power of mentors.  What counts as a mentor?  

A Football coach?  A teacher who believed in you?  Your first boss?  Your supportive father-in-law?  

Mentors come in all shapes and sizes.  Sometimes they come in the shape of a book.  That is, what if your best mentors aren't flesh and blood?  What if you could find the support and wisdom you needed from long-dead poets, philosophers, and statesmen?

We know that everyone needs mentors.  Almost as much as we need water.  In this week's episode of Finding Home, we talk about both- the importance of clean water and the power of mentors- with New York Times Best-selling Author Seth Siegel, who is also an activist, entrepreneur- and my long-time mentor.  His first book, Let There Be Water, tackled the history of water technology in Israel.  His second, Troubled Water, focused on water policy in America.

But this is but the latest chapter in Siegel's fascinating personal and business life.  With multiple businesses across multiple industries, we look to ask some relevant questions in the era of the Great Resignation:  How do you know when it's time to change careers?  How do you take that leap?  How important are mentors?   How do you have the confidence to try new things?
