Grief may often be a part of the Christmas season. The loss of a spouse, a family member, the
disappointments and loss of friends and relationships, illnesses, hospitalizations, and other various life
changes will detract from the joy of the season. Grief is real and is a part of life (Ecclesiastes 3.4). Even if
the grief is not your grief personally, you will probably be with others during this season who grieve. We
pray that these thoughts will be helpful.

The 2nd Essential is “Being Connected.” We will CONNECT – we will not live alone – we will continue to build strong friendships – we will stay connected and encourage each other. Friendships make all the difference. While the aging process often leads to isolation and greater loneliness, staying connect with growing friendships makes a tremendous difference in life. That is God’s design for friendships.

Christ went above and beyond in His great love for us and therefore calls us to give away our lives for others around us. This could be our families, people in our communities, even the most unexpected people He may bring into our lives that aren't like us. This is the distinguishing mark of the Church in the world and
God is calling us to be those kinds of people. We are to be His arms and His hands to those in need as we go through life, beginning in our homes.

In general, the Bible speaks of generations as 3 generations at a time – Abrahm, Isaac, and Jacob

Deuteronomy 6.2-9 – fathers, sons, and grandsons – and then perhaps great and great, great grandchildren as God allows.

God has us here for those purposes – to teach, lead, mentor future generations.
God calls us to the same multi-generational tasks wherever He takes us – church, schools, community involvement, wherever He leads.

This is the introduction to a 7 Part Series on the Seven Essentials for Finishing Well. 

You know, our desire as older people is to change the narrative of our lives. Our culture says we're finished, we're retired, we're over the hill. But I don't believe that we're here as Christians to make a greater difference for Christ. Throughout our remaining years. We want to use all that God has poured into our lives and leave a legacy that will strengthen the work of Christ for generations to come.

One of the joys of aging is that God has new purposes and experiences for us every day that we live. Whether it is new people or friends we already know, each day brings new opportunities to get “out of ourselves and love others.” Perhaps its and encouraging word, taking time to listen, a simple act of service, or a new project never before considered, God leads us and He calls us to be available to serve His purposes in life.

As Christians heaven is our destiny. Even though we do not take enough time to think about and/or prepare for it, in a very real sense heaven is the answer to everything. Looking at all of life through the lens of eternity and heaven ought to make all the difference as to how we live our lives today. We’ll look at biblical truths and we’ll make practical applications concerning the impact of heaven on our lives and the choices we make.

In our 7 Essentials series, we complete the series with heaven. But shouldn’t we consider our starting point with the end in view? There is a sense in which the 7th Essential informs each of the previous 6 Essentials. So, let’s begin our review of the 7 Essentials with trying to imagine what heaven might be like and trying to image our new relationship with our heavenly Father. We’ll focus some time reimaging our first day in heaven.
