Corporate Change Management vs Life Change Management
Hey there! Are you tired of the daily grind and constantly striving to get ahead? Well, I've been there too. In fact, I spent years in the corporate world, navigating the world of strategy development, change management, and implementation. I even have the certificates to prove it!
Let me tell you, all those hours of training focused on figuring out the mission and vision statements, crafting the perfect words to rally everyone behind the desired outcome. We would spend weeks overthinking and waffling, trying to get it just right. But here's the thing - all that brainstorming and analysis was only the beginning.
We would then dive into SWOT analysis. You know, that nifty tool that identifies the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to the changes we wanted to implement. Strengths - what are you good at? Weaknesses - what do you need to account for? Opportunities - what could happen if things go well? Threats - what's standing in the way?
But here's where things got tricky. We would meticulously write everything down on whiteboards and sticky notes, feeling accomplished and patting ourselves on the back. We thought we had solved the world's problems! But guess what? When it came to putting those words into action, we often hit a roadblock.
Teams would start second-guessing their earlier decisions, circling back to the mission and vision statements, doing everything they could to avoid taking the action that would truly make a difference. And I get it, change can be scary. There's a lot at stake, and it's easy to be afraid of taking a stand, afraid of being the one to make a difference.
At my former company, I saw firsthand how ego-driven inaction held us back. Nobody wanted to champion the change if it wasn't a guaranteed success. People didn't want to make waves or upset anyone. So, we settled for the easy wins, the low-hanging fruit.
We would do something small, say we made a difference, and move on to the next thing. It was like living in a Dilbert comic for 15 years of my career!
But here's the thing - changing a corporate system is tough, but changing your own life? Well, it's a whole different game. You can apply the same principles we used in the corporate world to your personal life and make a real game-changing difference. When you start treating your life like a business, you can't help but optimize it.
