As we follow these guidelines for living in this new year of 2021, not only will our physical lives flourish but our spiritual lives will also be brought into a closer relationship with God.

As a nation, we are still fighting a virus that turned our country and the world upside down. As Christians, we are rowing upstream against a society that is basically anti-Christian. Many things about the future are both exciting and fearful. No matter what we face in a very unpredictable 2021with all of its cultural, political, and spiritual changes it will bring, few of us will experience the intense, painful opportunities that a man named Daniel faced. Though this story is 2,500 years old, the message is as current as today’s headlines. In every crisis and trauma, Daniel faced he found an opportunity to be used by God and God used him for good in the world. Daniel serves as an excellent model for us as we embark on the adventure of living in the year 2021.

The truth of the fact is that this new year that we are going into is filled with uncertainties. In fact, life is filled with uncertainties.

It is filled with uncertainties because none of us know what this new year or even life is going to bring at us. Benjamin Franklin said: “‘In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”

But as believers we have something else we can be certain about.

It is a certainty that we need to hang onto as we realize that we are not in control of life, never have been, and never will be. It is a certainty that we need to hang onto, so we are not overwhelmed by life’s uncertainties and allow them to cause us to live in a defeatist mentality. So, as we go into this new year, as we continue in life, I want us to look at this truth: Life is uncertain, but God is not.

Throughout both the Old and New Testaments, angels were God’s special messengers. In the Christmas story, angels played a very special role in announcing the birth of Jesus. When the angel appeared to Mary to tell her she would be Jesus’ earthly mother, he told her not to be afraid. He brought a message of peace to Mary. He wanted her to know she was called by God to be the mother of Jesus. Jesus came to bring us the gift of peace. Because of our sin, the Bible says we are separated from God (Romans 3:23). God sent Jesus to provide the way for us to receive God’s love and be at peace with Him (Romans 5:1). The Bible says that it was God’s love that brought Jesus into the world as a baby. Just like the angels, it is important that we worship Jesus and tell others about His birth and the peace He offers.
