God wanted the people of Judah to see Nineveh and the Assyrian empire through the lens of His good, just, and sovereign character. He calls us today to do the same. If we can learn to see our world through the clarifying lens of who God really is then we can experience life as He really wants. But how does understanding who God really is help us face the world around us? Can we really experience peace as we live in tumultuous times? As we look at the end of Nahum, we find God warning the Assyrians about what was going to happen and even telling them how they needed to be prepared. God doesn’t do anything in secret…..Satan does that. God puts it all out in the open. He knows that He is sovereign, and no one can stop His plans even if they know about them and how He is going to accomplish them ahead of time. God is always upfront so no one can say, “I didn’t know.” For mankind today, God is upfront in letting all know that the difference of living an eternity under His wrath or an eternity in His love is Jesus.

What we can learn from the destruction of Nineveh?

How did its people get to the point where God finally stepped in with judgment?

This example, recorded for us from biblical history, gives a clear picture of the broken morality that brought down the Ninevites and the entire Assyrian nation.

If we will take to heart the message of Nahum we can learn to avoid the moral rebellion that brought about God’s eventual destruction of Nineveh.

What do we do when we read God’s promises in the Bible and our first thought is, “Yeah, right! There’s no way!” Sometimes our circumstances and God’s promises don’t seem to line up. These can be frustrating experiences as we struggle to believe that God will do what He has said. We’re going to learn from Nahum this Sunday morning that God always keeps His promises completely. In His time, His way, for His glory and our greatest good, God will always do what He has said.
