Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.” 3 But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.

7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

Jesus’ teaching in Luke 21:5–38 comes during Passion Week as He prepares His followers for what’s ahead. He warns against a false sense of security—even the temple, as impressive as it was, would not last. Our safety isn’t found in what feels stable in this world, but in Christ.

Jesus also tells us not to be fooled or terrified by end-times talk. Many will claim to know the timeline, but believers are called to listen to Jesus, stay grounded in Scripture, and refuse fear.

As hardship and opposition come, Jesus calls His people to take their witness seriously. Trials become opportunities to shine, and He promises to give His followers what they need to say. This passage is ultimately filled with hope: Jesus will return, redemption is drawing near, and the call is clear—stay awake, pray, and stand firm with Him.

10 Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; 11 for it is written,

“As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,
    and every tongue shall confess to God.”

In “The Condemned vs. The Commended” (Luke 20:45–21:4), Jesus contrasts the fake righteousness of the scribes—who love status and public recognition—with the pure devotion of a poor widow who gives everything she has. Jesus warns against practicing faith “to be seen,” and He reminds us that rejecting Him leaves a person under real judgment and condemnation—while in Christ there is no condemnation.

Then Jesus points to the widow’s offering as a picture of wholehearted trust: the rich give out of abundance, but she gives sacrificially. The sermon calls us to examine our hearts—especially what our giving reveals about what we treasure—and invites us to respond by giving our whole lives to Jesus, who first gave His life for us.

Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, 2 and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. 3 And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. 4 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
