Have you ever been so excited as a first responder family to get away on a vacation together and suddenly, instead of feeling thrilled, you are overcome with apprehension and dread? Just think about it—vacations are unknown and unpredictable. So much can go wrong. With an operational stress injury, the change to family routines can take us out of our comfort zones, cause anxiety, and be incredibly stressful rather than fun and exciting.
Kimberly has been there and knows firsthand the toll that trauma and operational stress injury takes on the whole family—interfering with the ability to relax and truly enjoy the getaway.
Today’s episode lays out realistic strategies to help plan a successful family vacation.
“The first thing that is important to acknowledge is how hard transition and unpredictability is on the central nervous system when there is trauma…vacation is not the time to take a vacation from emotional regulation practices."
“This is not forever. This is just for right now. This is the way we vacation right now, but we will not always vacation this way.”
“Whenever our kids see us taking care of ourselves, they learn to take care of themselves. Our role modeling nurturing ourselves is another gift that we can give our kids.”
