Justice Deputy Minister Andries Nel visited the Virtual Priority Court for immigration cases at Durban Magistrates Court yesterday. The court is part of government's plan to speed up immigration cases and enforce laws more tightly. That plan was announced in the State of the Nation Address and approved by Cabinet earlier this year. Nel said the focus is ensuring all people entering South Africa do so lawfully. 

Gauteng Traffic Police Chief Inspector Samuel Mashaba has been placed on precautionary suspension with immediate effect. The decision follows admissions he made at the Madlanga Commission that may breach the Public Service Code and departmental policy. Allegations include misuse of official powers, state resources and accepting compensation from a member of the public. Mashaba has been ordered to surrender firearms, phones and other state equipment and is barred from government premises while a formal disciplinary process unfolds. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma has confirmed the successful repatriation of Sihle Makhaye's mortal remains from Russia to the province. He died in Russia after allegedly being lured there with the promise of a lucrative job. The Democratic Alliance says IPID in KwaZulu-Natal is overwhelmed, handling over 8000 cases with only 24 investigators. The party says this includes 426 deaths linked to police action over two years but just six convictions were secured. DA NCOP member Mzamo Billy says serious delays and docket tracking problems between IPID, the NPA and SAPS are undermining accountability. Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Njabulo Nzuza says about 1,000 Malawian nationals camped outside Sherwood Hall in Durban have been processed and found to be in the country illegally. Congolese Solidarity Campaign President Reverend Raphael Bahebwa disputes this, saying most of the 400 refugees verified on Che Guevara Road hold valid documents. He adds those refugees were instructed this week to return to communities they fled or face transfer to Lindela Repatriation Centre. The conflicting accounts come as displaced families remain on the streets with urgent needs for food and shelter. Reverend Bahebwa joins us now for more details

A deadly crash on Steve Biko Road in Gezina, Pretoria, last month has led to allegations of police involvement in illegal street racing. 22-year-old Phillip Bezuidenhout, died when a Honda Ballade collided with another car during a drag race. AfriForum's Private Prosecution Unit says new evidence suggests some SAPS officers may have organised or ignored weekly races at the site. The unit has submitted footage and documents to police and is calling for a full investigation into possible complicity. SAPS says a case of culpable homicide is underway against one driver.
