Some companies are now considering retrenching workers as the crippling bus strike has entered its fourth week. The CCMA and the Bargaining Council have proposed an eight-point-seven-five percent salary increase for the first year and eight-point-two-five per cent for the second year. However the unions are now demanding nine percent for this year and eight percent for next year. The North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo has now been asked to take leave, after the Provincial Executive Committee yesterday refused to accept his resignation as Premier. Mahumapelo has appointed Finance MEC Wendy Nelson to act in his position, as he takes leave of absence. Nelson will act until the ANC's national leadership decides his fate. The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union, NEHAWU says it is going ahead with its planned mass action next week in the North West province. A faction opposed to the embattled North-West Premier Supra Mahumapelo has vowed to intensify efforts to unseat him. This follows an about-turn by Mahumapelo who reneged on his pledge to resign from high office. The Premier's fate and the fragile security situation in the North-West was subject of cabinet discussions in Cape Town. On Wednesday, Mahumapelo took leave from office and appointed Finance MEC Wendy Nelson to be acting Premier. Our Senior Political Correspondent Tshepo Ikaneng has filed this reports

Opposition parties in the Free State say they are disappointed with provincial cabinet reshuffle. Premier Sisi Ntombela made one change but retained previous MECs. Some have been moved to other portfolios. The newcomer Montsheng Tsiu, previously with labour union Nehawu is occupying the troubled health department previously held by Butana Khomphela who has been moved to Social Development. Former agriculture MEC Oupa Khoabane has been moved to Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs. Thabiso Radebe reports.

The Democratic Alliance has terminated the membership of Cape Town Mayor Patricia De Lille. The party's Federal Executive Committee made the announcement at a media briefing in Cape Town. The DA says she's consequently lost her mayoral position. The Ousted Cape Town Mayor Patricia De Lille says the termination of her membership is another shortcut by the DA to get rid of her. Bus commuters will still have to find alternative transport on Wednesday. This as SATAWU and the other four transport unions involved in the ongoing bus strike have put forward a counter offer, which now brings them closer to the offer earlier tabled by employers.The unions resolved to demand 9% increases for bus drivers in the first year and 8% in the second year, backdated to April 1. Employers had offered 8.75% salary increase for the first year and 8.25% for the second year.
