Oh my, what a treat hunting the buffalo that have roamed these lands for over 400,000 years.  These massive animals that we call Buffalo or Bison can reach weights up to 2000 lbs., and trust me you don’t want to be close to a buffalo when they get mad. 

The American Indians used every part of the Buffalo and it was a key source to surviving by eating their delicious meat and using their hide for clothes and tepees.  

So sit back and enjoy some to good talk on the buffalo.  

You never know what you’re going to catch fishing with Captain Danny Alverez fishing the Corpus Christie Bay.  Then up to Rockport for airboat fishing with Captain Chase Odem.  Redfish, drum, trout, catfish, stingray and a few other interesting fish.    

Steve talks about fishing these areas as a boy growing up in San Antonio and the memories over the years.  Fishing these waters reminds me of fishing the Missouri river there’s so many types of fish you never know what you’re going to catch.  The Corpus Christie Bay is shallow and there’s many houses out in the bay on stilts that people own and use to get away and fish.  Navigating these waters can be very tricky since it’s so shallow you need to know what you’re doing to stay safe.  

If you want to catch big Muskie you have to look up Shane Akin who is considered a legend muskie fishermen in these parts.  Shane and his partner Matt still hold the record for most muskie in a day and most in a 2 day tournament with 12 muskie recorded.  That record tournament landed them in the PMTT world championship muskie tournament in Kentucky.  They had some tough luck and ended up 4th in the world which is awesome considering they were going up against the best.  

We touch on the reproduction of muskie in the great lakes area going over the netting and milking of these Apex predators.  Did you know a muskie can grow 15 inches in one year?  Shane is a guide for all fish in the Okoboji area such as walleye, bluegill, bass, perch crappie etc.  With all these fish to catch, the one that sparks the most interest for him is the elusive Muskie.  Shane also shares some news about plans to split time guiding down in Florida.  

Learn how a battle with breast cancer inspired this mother daughter duo to raise awareness for breast cancer.  Dawn and Amanda’s mother daughter were both born and raised in South Dakota.  Not only that but they both spent time growing up on a South Dakota resort hunting and fishing and enjoying the outdoors.  This is part of the reason when they started the calendar, they had to have Dakota girls that actually enjoyed fishing hunting and the great outdoors. 13 year old Leif shares his tips and talks fishing Okoboji from the dock and shore.  Leif is wise beyond his years and explains we didn’t inherit this land from our ancestors were borrowing it from ours kids and future generations.   We talk fishing the bluegill spawn when they work their way to the shallows to bed.  We touch on the importance to allow these bluegill to spawn and do their thing when their on their nest and let the ones with eggs go.  Other fish mentioned in this podcast are crappie, perch, walleye, northern and drum.  Fishing is a passion for Leif and I’m sure he’s hooked for life. 

This is a trip out of my wheel house being a first time goose hunter.  Scott and Logan talk about what it takes to have a good Goose hunt.   Theres a lot of talk about preparation from scouting and getting permission from local farmers to hunt the geese.  We also talk about some of the other types of ducks we are able to hunt at that time.  We also discuss the decoys and different ways to call these geese in.  I learned a lot from these 2 and look forward to doing it next year.  

Take a trip to Kodiak where you never know what you may hook into.  Jim with ROC shares a trip of a lifetime.  This is a 4 day fishing trip with 3 days on a boat and 1 day fishing the streams by land.  There were some big halibut caught and oh my are they good eating.  Fish caught and mentioned are halibut, rock fish, salmon, ling cod and some other cool fish.  There was a good size octopus caught and brought to the side of the boat with a head the size of a bowling ball.  This is a trip I will definitely go back on.  

Alaska is a place that the true outdoors still exist.  

This may be the largest 2 man ice fishing tournament in the world.  The 22nd annual tournament has grown into a tournament that’s hard to get into because of the popularity.  Jesse talks about how it started and what it takes to organize such a large tournament.  The fishing tournament focuses on the popular walleye.  You're able to weigh in 6 walleye total per 2 man team with only 2 fish being over 20 inches in length and 4 between 14 and 20 inches.  

This fishing tournament is very well run and organized for having over 1000 participants.  It's tough to get in so get your name in the lottery or purchase a team on ebay you will then be in every year.  You also can't help to hook into some great tasting catfish and northern who will give you a fight you will remember.  

Kerry talks about fishing Lake Oahu in the beautiful Mobridge South Dakota area.  The Missouri river can be very rewarding when you dial in on the walleye and many other specious it can offer.  We touch on the different types of bait and presentations used and the question of whether colors make a difference.  You don’t want to miss the knowledge that Kerry has for the area.  Other fish popular to catch in Lake Oahu are small mouth bass, northern, perch, crappie, catfish, white bass and more.   

Fishing Lake Oaha will always be one of my favorite places to fish and experience the great outdoors.
