Workplace Flexibility – Thought Leaders
Published 7 March 2016
Julie McKay wears many hats. She is the:
* Executive Director of the Australian National Committee for UN Women;
* Convener for the Queensland Male Champions of Change; and
* Gender Advisor to the Chief of Australian Defence Force.
We met Julie McKay when she chaired a talk at QUT in 2015 titled ‘Gender Diversity is Good For Business’. One of the talking points was ‘working together for greater inclusiveness and flexibility’.
We wanted to know more so we invited Julie to talk to us about how flexible work arrangements binds all three of her roles together. And how this one key factor – access to genuine flexible work arrangements – is so important for all women, all around the world.
The depth of Julie’s knowledge is both profound and insightful. She believes there are three elements to making flexible work arrangements available and accessible for all and that it will happen through
“a combination of legislation, policy and attitudes”
Julie believes that the flexible work arrangement discussion needs to move beyond ‘part-time’ work.
“For me where we need to focus the energy and the effort in awareness about flexibility, is about the full-time equivalent worker who is working those hours differently. A split shift, working part on the weekends, doing the hours in a condensed way. So part of it is awareness about flexibility”
Julie shares her Top 3 for tips for a making flexible work arrangements accessible and the new normal:
* Honest Conversation. CEO’s acknowledging that they are no longer getting the full scale of productivity and that something has to change.
* Leadership Teams role modelling flexible working.
* Share the stories so it becomes okay to work flexibly, reward it even.
