After retiring from the organization in 2013, she was asked to join the Bipartisan Policy Center's Commission on Political Reform, a Washington group seeking ways to bridge the political divide in Congress. By the time its 29 members of the commission made recommendations, however, Barker had decided the real problem was bigger than Congress. It was all of us.

That was when she began formulating an idea for The Red Boot Way, a new organization whose name was inspired by the gift of a pair of red boots from her daughter Helen.

Madeleine Black's Bio:

I have an unusual personal story which I use to inspire and motivate others. I chose to forgive the two men who gang-raped me when I was thirteen years old, and I share my story for many reasons.

I want to end the shame, stigma, and silence surrounding sexual violence, enabling others to find their voice, whatever their story is. I want people to know that it's not what happens to us that is important but what we do with it. I will show how changing my mindset tapped into my resilience and transformed my life, making people question their own thinking and encouraging them to see that there are always choices to make, and if we choose to, we can get past anything that happens to us in life both professionally and in our personal life. I want to encourage others to live their lives courageously, too, but ultimately, I want to inspire hope and show people that we are all so much stronger than we think we are.

The sharing of my story publicly on The Forgiveness Project's website in September 2014 opened many doors for me in ways I never imagined, and the invitations started to pour in. Many women and men got in contact and explained how reading my story gave them strength, hope, and a different perspective of what's possible in their lives. I have taken part in both TV and radio interviews and has been invited to share my story of being gang-raped as a teenager at conferences, book events, schools, etc. I recognize that I was a victim of a crime that left me silent for many years but has now found my voice and intends to use it. Not just for me, but for so many who can't find theirs yet.

Crystal Emerick is the founder and executive director of Brave Step. As a survivor of sexual abuse and assault, Emerick found hope and healing through her own experience in therapy. After a long and healing journey, a passion for helping adult survivors find relief was born in June 2011.

At that time, the Eastern North Carolina native made a commitment to help survivors and their loved ones identify and receive quality trauma care and find connection with those who understand. Brave Step was officially incorporated in 2014 with a mission of strengthening adults impacted by sexual abuse by providing meaningful steps on their healing journey. A University of North Carolina graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and political science, Emerick resides in Concord, N.C., with her husband, son, and dog.

Yenting Liu is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with significant experience in case management. She has worked with several nonprofits in Boston, Los Angeles, and D.C., including working directly with survivors of trauma such as domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Yenting is drawn to helping others to navigate hardships and obstacles in order to reach their goals and potential. She utilizes individualized strengths-based approach when working with clients. Yenting has a Masters in Social Work from the University of Southern California with a concentration in community organizing, planning, and administration. She also has B.A in Psychology and B.S. in Elementary Education from Boston University.

Alanna is a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist, Registered Yoga Instructor, and Certified Heartmath Trainer. Alanna has over 20 years of experience working in the addictions field. She spent 12 years working for Carolinas Healthcare alongside Dr. George Raad in their medical detoxification program and then transitioned to the Intensive Outpatient program. 

​Alanna takes a holistic approach when working with clients combining the mind, body, and spirit in counseling. She specializes in working with addiction and trauma. In addition, Alanna facilitates a men’s group working on gender-specific issues, trauma, and 12 step recovery issues. Alanna works with families of chemically dependent individuals to facilitate interventions. Lastly, Alanna provides clinical supervision for those seeking their certification in substance abuse counseling.

Josh Bone was born and raised in Dallas, NC.  He attended college at UNC-Chapel Hill where he began to struggle with alcoholism. After years of active addiction, he will be celebrating four years of sobriety this month.

Josh works as a therapist with Carolina Center for Recovery located in the Charlotte area.  In 2019, he created Anchor of Hope Sober Living through a GoFundMe account  The non-profit, Anchor of Hope Sober Living now consists of seven sober living homes across the Charlotte and Matthews area serving over 45 residents.  

Josh currently resides in Charlotte with his wife, Jennifer, and two children. He and his family are a part of the Pritchard at South End church community as he and his wife serve on a weekly basis. Sharing God’s amazing grace and helping others has become a passion in his life illustrated by his willingness to walk by faith.
