Mike Olson was a mentor and English teacher at the Title One high school I began teaching at in Houston Texas. Now Mike is the CEO of Acton Academy in Northwest Houston with over 250 private schools worldwide. He’s a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Lacross with a bachelor of English and has an MBA from Rice University Jones Business School.
Innovation is Mike’s middle name. He has pioneered the micro-school model, an approach that rethinks traditional education transition as an alternate but equal form of k-12 education. The very definition of school discipline, attendance, and student achievement has been redefined by encouraging student’s education through the lens of a Heros Journey at Acton Academy Champions. Acton Academy introduces students to the latest in technology and socio-emotional learning while moving beyond the traditional tools of lectures, homework, high-stakes tests, and grades.
In this episode, we speak to Mike about collaborative classrooms of multi-age learners. We discuss how students manage their own discipline by protecting their culture, which they agreed to uphold. We also discuss the Heros Journey Method and why building character is very important for his student’s future.
