SHIPS IN HARBOR: The Gospel The Gospel is good news with a capital “G.” But in the church, though we assume we understand the gospel, many of us live with an incomplete and even distorted view of what the good news actually is. I hope you join us as we continue our new series Ships in Harbor to unpack the Gospel as good news that moves us outside of our comfort zones to bring hope and healing to our our city and beyond.

SHIPS IN HARBOR: Living the Adventure We Were Built For There is an the old saying that goes, “A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are built for.” While it's easy to spot a ship idling on the docks, our lives are a different matter. Though we may all feel the pull of open water, we often settle for a life that’s comfortable and safe. As we head into another fall season, how is your ship doing? Is it on the journey it was built for? Or do you feel like you’re idling in the doldrums of life?

REVELATION: Strength for Today, Bright Hope for Tomorrow For centuries the vivid imagery and end-of-the-world themes found in the book of Revelation have both captivated and confused followers of Jesus and non-Christians alike. But where we might get lost in the amazing (and sometimes startling) visuals, Revelation is not a play-by-play account of the end of the world. Instead, it is a book of hope written to a Church in uncertain times. More than an ending, in many ways Revelation is just the beginning of the life we are promised in the Kingdom of God.

REVELATION: Letter to Ephesus This week, we are continuing our new series Revelation: Strength for Today and Bright Hope for Tomorrow by reading Jesus’ letter of affirmation, and challenge, to the Ephesian Church. While there is a lot to celebrate about the Church at Ephesus, Jesus brings a strong word of challenge to them, and to us.

REVELATION: To the Church at Smyrna In the midst of incredible persecution and crisis, Jesus sends a word of encouragement to the Church at Smyrna, rallying them to endure in the face of hardship. Whatever you’re facing in your life this week, I hope you’ll be encouraged and inspired as we continue our series on the book of Revelation.

REVELATION: In It Throughout the history of the Christian faith, the idea that has long defined the Church is being a people that are “in” the world but not “of” it. Unfortunately, this has sometimes been interpreted as cutting off all ties to the world around us for fear of becoming “contaminated” or influenced by it. But when we look at the life of Jesus, we don’t see him observing from the outside looking in. We see him talking and eating with tax-collectors, prostitutes, and the religiously unfit. And more than any other person in history, he was not defined by his culture, but he invited others into a new culture—the Kingdom of God. We’re continuing to look at Jesus’ letters to the Church in Revelation this Sunday by focusing on his message to Thyatira, a church that was wrestling with being both in the world but not defined by the world.

REVELATION: Lukewarm In his letter to the Laodicean church, Jesus compares their apathy to lukewarm water that he spits out of his mouth. Just as water is meant to be refreshing and nourishing, our faith is meant to transform our hearts and minds to action.

Revelation: The Four Horsemen This week we’re diving head first into the vivid imagery of judgment in Revelation. While often interpreted with fear, understood in context, these passages can actually be a source of great comfort to us, especially as we try to make sense of a world in chaos.
