Florida Soccer Report

in terms of entertainment no match in world football was better this weekend than this one. In fact, I would argue with the best match I’ve seen in months from an entertainment standpoint. (I am not confusing, entertainment, with quality by the way). When coupled with today’s Gainbridge Super League match between Carolina and Jacksonville. We had two spectacular matches involving Florida teams on Sunday afternoon/evening.

We discussed this match as well as making an announcement regarding some Premier League coverage on this platform.

Ashlyn Puerta, a shining star in the USL Super League at only 18, is the focus of this interview. We delve into the journey of this Sporting Jax attacker, who already boasts three goals in four games this season. From her early days as a youth player, through the Albion system in San Diego, her transition to the boys' MLS Next team, her year at Florida State (including the ACC Championship victory over North Carolina), and now, the commencement of her professional career in Jacksonville – we explore it all. Kartik even got a question in on the FSU-UNC rivalry which if you know him, he drones on about as the epic women’s college soccer rivalry.

Winter Park-native and Stetson grad Charles Ahl has made a big impression in his rookie season in the USL Championship. Ahl was the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year while at Stetson and spent several seasons in the Orlando City SC youth setup.

Ahl played for the UPSL National Champion AS Frenzi side in 2023 along with Yan Diomande who now features in the Bundesliga for RB Leipzig.

Ahl scored the equalizer in a nationally-televised ESPN match for the Riverhounds against Miami in July on the last kick of the match and has now become a regular for the Hounds. He scored this past week in the 2-1 to Tampa Bay at Al Lang Stadium.

We dive deep into Charles career progression and development to this point including talking about playing in Florida, what its like to latch on with a professional club and the impact of a coaching-legend like Bob Lilley on his development.

We wrap up a great weekend of USL Super League action for the three Florida sides including a thriller in Fort Lauderdale. We also ponder how bad both Tampa Bay and Miami FC really are? When Lewis Hilton and Sebastián Blanco are missing these two sides appear to be the two worst in the USL Championship at the moment.
