A throwback to a podcast we did in March of 2021 with Leanne Norman. In the podcast we discuss the lack of women in sports coaching.
In this episode we spoke to one of the leading researchers within the area of gender equality and issues of diversity related to sports coaching, sports leadership, and organisations. Professor Leanne Norman is a Professor of Sport and Sociocultural Studies and Director of the Research Centre for Social Justice in Sport and Society within the Carnegie School of Sport.
Leanne works very closely with sporting bodies to encourage them towards improving the participation, performance, and leadership pathways for diverse social groups, principally, different groups of women.
We talk about how she set on her pathway to her research, where it has taken her and how it continues to not only be research but very much part of who she is in her everyday. When discussing her workplace Leanne is keen to share that they are not just the typical academics in tweed but very much focused on "Research for impact research for practice..." this is what drives her and her team daily.
Leanne shares her experiences in different organisations and how some are further forward then others. The programmes she and her team work on are towards supporting women to enhance their experience of sports coaching as a credible and valuable profession, as well as working with organisations to support them towards creating diverse leadership and coaching workforces.
All of these are ares that are very important to both of us and so it was a privilege to have this discussion with Leanne and reinforce our desire to share more stories of people who are working in the same field.

In this episode we spoke to the inspirational Coreen Brown. Being your best self is at the core of Coreen Brown's purpose and her mission is make sure that those she comes into contact with have that opportunity as well.
Coreen, is a UEFA 'A' Licence football coach and is the Assistant coach to the England Women U16 football squad (Elite Coach Placement). At an early age Coreen’s introduction to football and sport was playing with her brothers. She talks about how having that safe space place to play and express herself has been the foundation of how she believes sport should be for everyone. Coreen, joins us to talk about sport being an inclusive and safe space for children and adults. How her journey has led her to working with Westminster City Council as a Relationship Manager - Physical Activity, creating the right environment for young people to flourish.
We talk about the joy of playing sport, the importance of psychological safety in sport and how as a coach reflection and seeking feedback will help you develop in your role. Mastering leadership is a priority for Coreen and using her platform to speak for others and empower them to truly flourish.
Coreen discusses with us the roles she has done to date, including her first role at QPR and the work she was able to go on to do at Arsenal with the Boys academy as their U15 Assistant Coach and with the Arsenal girls academy.
Coreen is a role model and advocate for young women, men and all coaches. She is a leader and inspiration for everyone! I can't wait to hear more from her, because she is worth listening to!

In this episode and in our new series we are asking our guests to explore their stories using The Hero's Journey. We are very excited to have fellow coaches and podcasters and basically coolest coaching wizards from The Magic Academy Rusty and Fletch (Russell Earnshaw and John Fletcher).
They join Sarah and I today to discuss their coaching journey from being rugby players, coaches and how that has shaped their coaching philosophy. It is a simple one, they want coaches to get better so that they and players can have better experiences through their sport whatever that sport may be.
Check out their website which has some fantastic resources for coaches across many sports and can also be used in the business world.
We talk about super coaches and the importance of development coaches being embedded in all sports and supported by governing bodies.
These guys believe in the importance of supporting coaches, creating communities of coaches whose purpose is to create excitement, fun, growth and ultimately create environments for players from grassroots to elite to truly flourish as people and players.
We also explore who influenced their coaching philosophy and inspired them also how they have both got a 'obsession' of learning and continuing to grow as coaches by seeking feedback and stretching themselves in different spaces, both in the sporting and business world.
Frankly, if you want to be a coach and improve as a coach, listen to these guys, they have so much to share and they want to hear your thoughts too.
Check out their podcast where, in their own words they..."love to hang with rockstars from the coaching world and get them sharing through some pretty cool questions"
This was such fun to be part of and interesting and inspiring...please take a listen and enjoy.
