In the spirit of Flow State hero and spirit animal Brian Eno, we took a cue from Oblique Strategies and put this mix in alphabetical order by track name. One implication of this strategy is that Rindert Lammers’ “Closing Credits” appears on the mix before his “Opening Credits.” Another is that we hear club banger Passarani’s “Rotten Disco” immediately before violinist Esther Abrami’s interpretation of Erik Satie’s “Gymnopedie No. 1.” Along the way there’s music from Barbarelle, Loscil, Walt McClemons, Kaki King, Mat Eric Hart, and Nino Rota. Propitiously, the mix ends with upbeat tracks by Dever to Iaye and Mattheis. We hope you enjoy.

  • Flow State Ep. 277: RVNG Intl. Label Edit

Today’s mix is a label edit of RVNG Intl., a Brooklyn-based label founded in 2003. (We pronounce it “revenge” but their website says, “As for the correct pronunciation of RVNG, please consult the cosmos.”) We’ve featured many RVNG records over the years, so we were delighted to pore through their archives with Matt, the founder. This fully instrumental mix comes on the heels of the label’s latest release, Under a Familiar Sun by The Vernon Spring. The titular track from that record kicks us off, followed by one of our favorite songs of all time, “Hollywood Dream Trip,” which we only recently learned RVNG was responsible for putting out. We move through ambient, new age, and electronic pieces by artists such as Bing & Ruth, Ariel Kalma, Paule Anna Strom, Arp, Oliver Coates, and Wayne Phoenix. We play a Satomimagae ambient/field recording piece we hadn’t heard before (she has a fantastic new album). We continue with instrumentals by Emily A. Sprague, Rachika Nayar, Ka Baird, Dialect, and more. Greg Fox is responsible for the first all-drum-solo track on a Flow State mix in memory. Then the pace picks up with the likes of Kate NV, Pink Skull, Blondes, and Flore Laurentienne, before Horse Lords play us out. This episode is available to everyone, so feel free to share far and wide.

Today’s mix opens with violinist Esther Abrami’s outstanding performance of Satie’s classic “Gymnopédie No. 1” as arranged by Svetoslav Karparov. That’s followed by a great early ‘90s jam by Tokyo’s Natural Calamity and a colossal composition by Loscil from his new album, Lake Fire (highly recommend). The mix proceeds with ambient pieces by Gustavo Denouard, Kali Malone, and K. Leimer. There’s a celtic folk instrumental from David Murphy (h/t Bob Holmes for that one). We play some throwbacks by Nino Rota and Jan Jelinek. Then we pick up the pace with K-Lone, Passarani, Mattheis, and Djrum. Rindert Lammers’ “Closing Credits” closes us out. We hope you enjoy.

  • Flow State Ep. 275 (Guest mix by Elori Saxl)

Today we have a guest mix from Elori Saxl, an American composer from the midwest who has a new score out for the documentary Texada.

This mix is defined mostly just by what I’ve been listening to lately, but I did notice I tended to lean into North American composers and specifically those whose music seems to reflect the North American landscape and its vastness. It feels fitting for a mix celebrating the release of my original score for the film Texada, which explores the intersection of land/geology and people on the island of Texada off the coast of British Columbia. I also figured I’d take advantage of this long-form mix to get to play out longer tracks and multiple movements from pieces.

The mix opens with a track by CTM off her album Vind, which has been one of my recent favorites with its sense of pulses both real and implied. Maxime Denuc’s album Nachtorn has been another recent favorite. Made by sending midi signals into a pipe organ, it gets at that intersection of classical harmony and dance pulse that I’m always after. I have a few pieces by John Adams. I’ve been slowly making my way through his autobiography all spring and enjoying learning about some lesser-known pieces. Light Over Water was composed as the score for a dance piece by Lucinda Childs with scenography by Frank Gehry for the opening of LACMA in 1983. Through their long harmonic gestures, pieces by Smerz, John Luther Adams, Leilehua Lanzilotti, and Nico Muhly feel to me like wide landscapes in the far north. Matthew Halsall’s “Together” has been breaking my heart all spring.

Today’s mix goes out to Earth, aka Gaia, the best planet in the universe. It’s two hours of music that features field recordings of mother nature or is inspired by natural surroundings. Mort Garson’s majestic “Plantasia” opens the mix. Then we have a new track by Evan Shornstein (aka Photay) and Will Epstein, who recorded synth and saxophone in upstate NY next to a pond full of spring peeper frogs (their album is called Frog Raag). Then we get into Gigi Masin, KMRU, Saapato (Brendan Principato), Patricia Wolf, Matthew Hiram, and Green-House. We linger on the Hiroshi Yoshimura track “Green” before a classic from Ariel Kalma and a new one by Woo (from the standout series Music To Watch Seeds Grow By). We play some Emily A. Sprague, Early Fern (h/t marine eyes), Calming River, and Ashra. There’s a brief recording of a great horned owl from us before Lawrence English’s 14-minute field recording, “The Picnic,” ends the mix. We hope you enjoy.

Today’s mix opens with an upbeat track: Phoenix’s first single, the instrumental “Heatwave,” which we discovered via Derrick Gee’s Lot Radio set from last April. (We slowed the track down a bit.) Then there are atmospheric tracks by Saapato (in collaboration with James Bernard, marine eyes, and Patricia Wolf), the Brendan Eder Ensemble, Kali Malone, and DOVS. We excerpt three tracks from the new Strategy record, A Cooler World, and two tracks from the newly reissued Hiroshi Yoshimura record, Flora.
