For this special edition of Brian Damage, accompanying us is RonToon of Harvested Records to discuss what Harvested does and to focus on their incredible sounding upgraded version of “BBC Archives 1967-1969”.  The liner notes say “This release required a lot of work and took more than 6 months to complete. The purpose was to present each track in the best possible quality. The process was long because it was performed on a track by track basis. For each song, we had to compare many different sources in order to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each version and then decide which one(s) to work on. The mastering work was done very carefully, trying to repair every flaw that could be corrected… and there were a lot (tape warble, crackles, drop-outs, incorrect speed, etc).”  Enjoy!

The name of the podcast almost has nothing to do with the theme but it does describe the manner in which it progresses.  A few weeks ago I realized that I’ve never featured the KQED sessions in full, not even on the radio back in 2004.  Crazy I neglected this for so long and its long overdue.  For the rest of the podcast, I wasn’t 100% sure what direction to take it.  Well, the other day, Craig Williams, who’s responsible for the last podcast idea again suggested the following, “Years ago you did a podcast featuring a compilation of the Pink Floyd radio sessions, well how about doing one featuring their appearances on TV. As it focuses on the bands early years, it provides a nice contrast to recent podcasts”  He also suggested KQED.  What a coincidence and bingo.  We were watching TV… watching TV.  Please don’t mind me flipping the channels.  Here’s the playlist.

Podcast time!  The theme for this one is the brain child of Brain Damaged listener, Craig Williams of Newcastle, U.K. He writes, “Here’s a daft, but naughty, suggestion for a future podcast. How about a section that contains PF/RW/DG songs with rude words”?  You know, thats a f@%kin great idea!  Consider it done!

I’m still working on the syncing project. So in the meantime here’s a quick podcast I whipped up thanks to Brain Damaged listener Jim Gilbert of Montgomery, Alabama who emailed “Why not the New Orleans Superdome show to feature in a podcast, to celebrate the Saints? (I’m actually a Pats fan, by the way.) It could work either way if they win, it’s a Floydian lagniappe. If they lose, it’s a consolation prize for all Saints/Floyd fans.”  Excellent Idea!  Suggestions are always appreciated so keep sending them in.

Welcome back!  During the holiday break Harvested Records gave a select few a sneak peak at an upcoming project with a set of master recordings from Floyd’s 1971 Montreux gig.  These are the raw files as received and Harvested will be creating a definitive version in the near future.

The taper used 2 Sennheiser MD-421 and a Uher 4200 reel to reel recorder at 19ips. Concerning his rig at the time, he had the following to say about it…

“I had my UHER ‘custom unbuilt’ in multiple parts, so I could sneak it in more discretely. Then I built a whole ‘neck-holder’ (like the one Bob Dylan’s used to hold the harp), a heavy construction sewed in a tough-tissued jacket (often way to hot to bear at concerts) and the two mics were placed niftily beside each ear hidden by my long hair…”

He also went on to say that he’s never released this recording directly from the master tapes… that is until now.  The Pavillion, Montreux, Switzerland, 18. September 1971.

Ivor Wynne Stadium, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, 28. June 1975. Here’s a gig that been long overdue for a podcast..

This features the second to last performance of Echoes with Roger still in the band.  Their performance is excellent and the sound is amazing (after fixing it up of course).

It was the last show of the North American Tour so in a dramatic finale, Pink Floyd’s crew decided to go out with a bang and used up their remaining pyrotechnics around the stadium scoreboard.  The explosion at the climax of the show was so intense it blew the scoreboard to pieces and shattered windows in neighboring houses.   All in the name of Floyd.

Pepperland Auditorium, San Rafael, CA, 17. October 1970.  This is from the master tape.  Great sound, great show but the band experienced some technical glitches at the start.  To make up for it, the Floyd perform incredibly well and just jam out.  If you dig early gigs, then this is for you.  Enjoy!

I’m back.  I can’t thank you enough for your patience.  Its been long enough so lots get this rollin’.  Back in July I posted a 1977 gig out of Cleveland and since then I got to visit the area.  The photo you see taken at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, is the entire reason behind this podcast.  Pretty simple.  We go back again to Municipal Stadium, this time 27th May 1994.
