  • Is It Easier to Learn English or Spanish?

Picking up a new language isn’t always easy. But have you ever thought about why some languages feel easier than others?

In this episode, I talk about what really makes a language feel easy or hard. I share my own thoughts as a Spanish speaker and compare English and Spanish to show that both languages have their tough spots. English has things like weird pronunciation and phrasal verbs. Spanish has tricky verb conjugations and formal vs. informal words for “you.”

I also explain how some languages—like Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese—are easier to learn if you already speak one of them, since they have a lot in common. But that doesn’t mean it’s always easy. Even small differences can make learning a bit more complicated.

Every language has easy parts and hard parts. The most important thing is how much time you spend with the language. The more you listen, speak, read, and practice, the better you get.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Language learning is a gradual process that requires patience and acceptance of challenges.

    • The difficulty of learning a language is influenced by both language structure and cultural factors.

    • Formality and politeness rules vary between languages and can be confusing for learners.

  • Sometimes It's OK to Break the Rules

Have you ever stopped yourself mid-sentence in English because you weren’t sure if it was “correct”? What if I told you that sometimes, breaking the rules might help you speak better?

In this episode, I talk about why making mistakes when you speak English isn’t a big deal and why it’s sometimes even helpful. I explain how being fluent matters more than being perfect, especially in conversations. If you stop to fix every little error, you might lose your train of thought or make the conversation awkward.

I also share when accuracy is more important, like in emails or reports, and how tools like Grammarly can help you check your writing. The main idea is to focus on speaking clearly and naturally and worry less about being perfect. That’s how you really improve.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Work on both fluency and accuracy little by little

    • Most mistakes go unnoticed in conversations, so don’t panic

    • Writing gives you more time to fix things, so take advantage of that

  • How to use AI to improve your English, interview with Russell Stannard

Ever feel overwhelmed by all the tools and apps out there for learning a language? What if you could use AI to make language learning easier and more fun?

In this episode, I chat with Russell Stannard about how he uses AI to boost his language skills. He shares how he watches YouTube videos, gets transcripts with TurboScribe, and then uses AI tools like Gemini to create quizzes, translate words, and dig deeper into the content. It’s a smart way to turn any video into a personalized learning experience.

We also dive into AI bots like Gliglish and Lingolet, which help you practice speaking by having real conversations. Russell explains how they provide feedback to improve your skills without overwhelming you with corrections.

And when it comes to learning vocabulary, Russell gives some great advice: focus on just a few words each day and keep reviewing them. He talks about using “dead time,” like while walking or doing chores, to listen to the language and reinforce what you’ve learned.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Learning a language through content that interests you makes the process more engaging and effective.

    • Avoid the temptation to learn too many words at once; instead, focus on mastering a few key words each day for better retention.

    • Repetition is crucial—revisit the same content multiple times to strengthen your understanding and boost language recall.

    Resources:

Russell Stannard is a former high-energy particle physicist turned expert in educational technology. As a Professor Emeritus at the Open University, he now focuses on integrating technology into language teaching. • False Cognates That Could Ruin Your Business Deals

Have you ever said something in English that sounded perfectly right, but people looked at you like you said something strange? What if the word you used wasn't actually wrong, it just didn't mean what you thought it did?

In this episode, I’m talking about something that trips up a lot of people, even advanced speakers — false friends. These are those sneaky words that look or sound just like words in your native language, but actually mean something totally different in English. If your first language is Spanish, you’ve probably run into these more than once.

I walk through a few common examples that can really throw you off if you're not careful. We talk about actual and actual, assist and asistir, fabric and fábrica, and a few others that cause confusion all the time. You’ll hear how easy it is to make mistakes with these, even in professional settings.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Double-check any word that looks familiar before using it.

    • Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification in team settings.

    • Miscommunication caused by false friends can lead to serious issues at work.

  • Understanding Different English Accents in Global Business

Have you ever struggled to understand someone in English, even though they were speaking clearly? Maybe it was just their accent. If that’s happened to you, you’re definitely not alone. In this episode, I talk about how to get better at understanding different English accents.

I explain why everyone has an accent and how it’s shaped by our first language and culture. I also share some real examples from my own experience working with people from all over the world and how I’ve learned to adjust.

You’ll hear some tips for training your ear, like listening to content from different countries, using subtitles, and asking for clarification when needed. The goal is not to expect everyone to speak the same but to become more flexible and confident when talking with people from different places.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Expecting a “standard” accent from everyone isn’t realistic or helpful.

    • Ask for clarification when you need it—there’s no shame in that.

    • Adapting your listening skills is a must in global communication.

  • Adjective Order in Business English: A Complete Guide for Non-Native Speakers

Have you ever tried to describe something in English—like a product or a report—but it just didn’t sound natural, even though the words were correct? It’s probably not what you said, but the order you said it.

In this episode, I talk about the correct order of adjectives in English. There’s a structure native speakers follow, and once you know it, your English will instantly sound more natural and professional. I break it down using a simple formula called OSASCOMP—and no, you don’t have to memorize it all at once.

You’ll hear real examples, common mistakes, and how this small detail can make a big difference in how clear and confident you sound at work. Plus, I give you a quick practice challenge to try it for yourself.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Whether you're writing, speaking, or presenting, this small detail makes a big difference.

    • Keep it simple; stick to 2 or 3 adjectives

    • The better your descriptions, the more professional and trustworthy you’ll sound

  • How to Stay Motivated While Learning Business English

Have you ever felt like you’re putting in all this effort to learn English, but the progress just isn’t showing? Maybe you’re exhausted, unmotivated, and just want to quit? Trust me, you’re not alone. But here’s the thing—motivation is only part of the process. In this episode, I’ll share how to keep going, even when motivation fades.

In this episode, I talk about why motivation comes and goes and why you don’t need to rely on it to make progress. Learning English is a long-term process, more like a marathon than a sprint. The key isn’t to stay motivated all the time but to build habits that keep you improving even on days when you don’t feel like it.

I also share some simple ways to make English a natural part of your daily life, like switching your personal notes and messages to English, finding content that interests you, and even talking to yourself in English. It may sound silly, but it actually works. The goal is to make learning feel effortless so you don’t have to depend on motivation to keep going.

    Key Takeaways:

    • It’s better to practice a little every day than to study for hours once in a while.

    • Motivation isn’t reliable, but routines and habits are

    • Learning doesn’t have to be a lonely process—connect with others and make it enjoyable.
