Why Does Ganesha Have an Elephant Head? The Full Story | Episode 18B — It’s Deeper Than We Thought

We grew up hearing stories about Lord Ganesha. But as adults, have we ever stopped to ask what those stories might actually be trying to tell us?

In this episode of Fly & Butterfly, Vishnu and Mahitha continue their Ganesh Chaturthi conversation by going deeper into the stories, symbolism and philosophy surrounding Ganesha.

We talk about how Parvati created Ganesha, the story behind his elephant head, why Ganesha is associated with removing obstacles, and why he is traditionally worshipped before beginning something new.

Then we get into some of the stories many of us heard growing up — including Ganesha and the moon, the Ganesh Chaturthi tradition of avoiding the moon before completing the puja, and the famous competition between Ga

What starts as a conversation about Ganesh Chaviti quickly turns into a trip through our childhoods in India — the festivals, family traditions, schools, religion, and beliefs that shaped the way we see the world today.

Vishnu remembers growing up with stories of Ganesha, waking up early with the neighborhood kids to collect patri for the puja, visiting different Ganesh celebrations, and the excitement surrounding the festival and Nimajjanam.

And, of course, he somehow manages to personally identify with Ganesha because of one childhood incident involving way too much sambar rice. 😂

From there, we go back to our school days. Both of us attended Christian/convent schools while growing up Hindu, leading to some funny — and surprisingly meaningful — memories about nuns, church, cricket, prayer, and learning about different religions while still practicing our own traditions.

The conversation eventually becomes bigger than Ganesh Chaviti.

We talk about why Hindu traditions use physical representations of God, what rituals meant to us as children versus what they mean to us now, and what it was like growing up in an India where Hindu, Christian and Muslim traditions could all be part of your everyday life.

Later, we get into Jyotisha, astrology, faith and belief — including how our relationship with these ideas has changed over time and whether sometimes the power of belief itself can give people reassurance when life feels uncertain.

And Mahitha shares a prediction she was once given about the person she would eventually marry… which becomes especially interesting considering she ended up marrying someone named Vishnu.

We didn’t set out to record Vishnu’s life story…but somehow that’s exactly what happened.

In this episode of Fly & Butterfly, Vishnu and Mahitha start with a conversation about health, energy, motherhood and marriage, and eventually find themselves going all the way back to Vishnu’s childhood in India.

Vishnu shares what it was like when his parents moved to America while he stayed behind with extended family, the sacrifices his family made in search of a better life, and the losses that shaped him during those years.

The conversation then moves into immigration, how India has changed, whether moving to America still represents the same opportunity it once did, and how our idea of the “American Dream” changes depending on where we are in life.

And then comes one of the best stories of the episode: after moving to America in high school and barely speaking English, Vishnu was nominated for senior class president as a prank.

Instead of walking away, he decided to run.

That decision led to controversial campaign posters, a trip to the vice principal’s office, an entire hallway chanting his slogan, and enough votes to force a runoff election.
