Brigham McCown, the former Acting Administrator at the Pipelines & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (“PHMSA”) inside the Department of Transportation gives the facts on the East Palestine derailment and a bit of a history lesson to put it into perspective. Though East Palestine has shocked the nation, the rail industry is actually significantly safer than in the 1960s and 1970s which saw incidents of similar magnitude happening at much greater frequency. These events are not unprecedented, though the 24-hour cable news cycle that did not exist in earlier times would suggest so. There is reason for optimism for the people impacted by the disaster. Mr. McCown explains the safety record of rail vs. pipelines and offers instructive advice for making the transport of essential hazardous materials more safe. Both Jacki and Mr. McCown grew up on the Ohio River. Jacki offers her view of what should be done to help the people of East Palestine.
